Differential Growth of Grapevine Genotypes Vitis vinifera L as Affected by Sodium Chloride Levels and Selection of Salt tolerant Ones Hadith Yadegaripour yadegaripourhadith@yahoo com Date of Submission May 2011 Department of Horticulture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Cyrus Ghobadi Cyrus@cc iut ac ir Bahram Baninasab bbani@cc iut ac irAbstractGrapevine is one of the most important small fruit crops in Iran and the world The grapevines are considered asmoderately sensitive to salinity stress This study was done to assess the salt tolerance of six grapevine genotypesunder in vivo conditions For this purpose one year pot plants of six grapevine genotypes Keshmeshi GhermezGhazvin Asgari Yaghooti Sefid Rishbaba Sefid Siah and Shahani and NaCl at 0 30 60 and 90 mML 1 wereused The experiment was caried out as a factorial 4 6 based on completely randomized design with fourreplications The results showed that salt stress significantly reduced the most of the vegetative growth prametersincluding fresh and dray weight of root and shoot stem length root number and length With increasing salinitylevels the ratio of the necrotic leaves to total leaves N T was increased The results also indicated that therewas significant differences between the used genotypes in the experiment The lowest means of shoot freshweight was related to the Asgari genotype and the highest root fresh weight was recorded in Keshmeshighermez ghazvine Shahani and rishbaba sefid genotypes The highest ratio of the necrotic leaves was related toSiah Asgari and also yaghooti sefied genotypes Yaghooti sefied and Keshmeshi ghermez ghazvine genotypesshowed the highest increase in stem length and the lowest root length means was related to Asgari and yaghootisefied genotypes Root diameter in this experiment were not affected by salinity and the most root numbersallocated to Siah and Keshmeshi ghermez ghazvine genotypes With increasing salinity in leaves increasedelectrolyte leakage percent and the lowest means was related to Keshmeshi ghermez ghazvinegenotype In allgenotypes and at all NaCl levels the chlorophyll fluorescence index significantly decreased but the Shahaniand Keshmeshi ghermez ghazvine genotypes expressed the highest means of the this trait In most of genotypes the content of proline in leaves were increased with increasing the levels of salinity The highest rate of prolinein leaves was recorded in Siah genotype and the lowest rate was measured in Asgari and yaghooti sefiedgenotypes With increasing the NaCl levels accumulation of potassium and sodium in leaves of all grapevinegenotypes were increased such that Asgari Siah and rish baba sefied genotypes had the highest mean content ofpotassium and the highest mean content of sodium allocated to Siah yaghooti sefied and rishbaba sefiedgenotypes With increasing salinity levels root sodium content in all genotypes was increased while a decreaseof potassium content was determined in the same part Genotypes Siah Rishbaba sefied and Asgari had thelowest root potassium mean and the Yaghooti sefied and Shani showed the lowest sodium accumulation in theirroot tissues With increasing salt concentration the potassium content of stem tissues decreased while thesodium accumulation was increased in the same tissues The highest potassium and sodium accumulation instem tissue were recorded in Asgari and Siah genotypes There was a significant interaction between genotypesand NaCl concentrations in the most measured parameters except in root dry weight root diameter leafelectrolyte leakage percent and stem sodium content The results indicated that there was a significant and veryhigh negative correlation between the ratio of the necrotic leaves to total ones and the measured parametersexcept root diameter in different genotypes Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence index was highly and positivecorrelated to other vegetative traits except root diameter index There was a posi
