Designing a Distribution Network in a Supply Chain Considering Direct Shipments from Manufacturing Plants Kosar Sadeghi Velni k sadeghivelni@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2011 04 27 Department of Ind ustrial Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Ali Shahande ali nook@cc iut ac irAbstractDue to the increasingly competitive global market environment and according to the share of costs ofdelivery and product distribution in the entire costs of supply chain organizations are trying to deliverproducts to customer with the lowest cost in adequate quantities and the on time in the right place Therefore Designing an appropriate and efficient distribution network is very important and considered as akey factor for success in the increasingly competitive global market environment that most important issuesin distribution network design can be referred to include determining the number location and capacity ofwarehouses and factories the optimum strategy to transfer product from the factory to warehouse andcustomer and from warehouse to customer In this thesis problem of designing the distribution network in amultilevel supply chain has been studied considering the possibility of direct transferring goods fromproduction equipment to consumer The possibility of direct transfer from Plant to consumer is raised due totoday s the make to order strategy is highly regarded In order to better understand the importance ofdistribution networks in the supply chain first has been discussed comprehensive study of supply chain anddistribution network Factors that affect designing the distribution network has been present and commonnetwork distribution models based on the delivery of goods to customers and the track of product delivery tocustomer are distinct has been introduced The problem modeled as mixed integer programming in three cases a single product Multi Product andsingle product with limited distribution radius The first model is static and definitive Any production anddistribution equipment have multi level capacity and the number of them in the model has been consideredvariables Second model is written as the first model development with conditions and characteristicsconsidered in the first model and to transfer of some product in distribution network Since there is probablythat a company can t transfer product to all distribution centers or customers and also there is probably adistribution center can t transfer product to all customers so in the third model has been consideredrestriction of distribution radius for production plant and distribution centers warehouse Despite thislimitation if distance between a plant and a distribution center or a customer to be less than Plant radius thenplant can transfer the product to them Also if distance between a distribution center and a customer to beless than distribution radius then a distribution center can transfer the product to customer Since the issue ofdesigning a distribution network is NP hard problem so a Meta heuristic method as particle swarmoptimization PSO method has been used To evaluate the effectiveness of the presented approach has beensolved 16 issue of first model 32 issue of II Model and 18 issue of the III model and results of solving themusing the proposed PSO algorithm has been compared with the results of solving them by Lingo software Comparing the results indicate efficacy of presented Method Keywords Supply chain Distribution network particle swarm optimization PSO distribution radius
