80 May 16 2011 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiDr Mohammad Zarrbini Zarrebini@cc iut ac irAbstractShape memory materials or SMM belong to very smart group of materials The materials deform intoa temporary shape and returns to its original shape by external environmental stimuli such as magneticfield electric field chemicals temperature humidity UV or pH These materials are categorized as shapememory alloys SMA shape memory polymers SMP shape memory ceramics SMC and shape memorygels Shape memory alloys and shape memory polymers are the most widely used of above mentioned fourgroups which can be used in single or combined form due to their properties The extensive use of shapememory polymers in textile industries is due to their ease of processing high recovery adjustable recoverytemperature and other advantages Temperature responsive shape memory polymers can be easily andpermanently deformed and upon heating return to their original structure In this project the effect of shape memory polymer coating on plain woven cotton fabric was investigated The coating operation renders the fabric as Shape Memory Fabric SMF The behavior and properties of theshape memory fabric were compared with identical untreated crease resistance and durable press finishedfabrics In order to be able to make the necessary comparisons plain woven fabrics woven at identical warpdensity and various pick densities were used Samples of fabrics with crease resistance and durable pressproperties were prepared Samples with the most recovery power were selected The used shape memorypolymer was cured under recommended conditions and behavior of shape memory polymer film wasevaluated Fabric samples were coated with the shape memory polymer and cured under same conditions Factors such as crease recovery angel air and water permeability water hydrophobicity bending behavior warp and weft crimp were examined Results showed that in comparison to conventionally treated fabrics the use of shape memory polymer isnot only more effective as a crease resistance finishing agent but also the crease resistance property isreversible Additionally no significant deterioration was observed in the recovery ability of the shapememory fabric after repeated loading cycle It was found that while air permeability of the shape memoryfabric is similar to the untreated fabric the air permeability of the fabric with conventional crease resistancefinish was the lowest It was established that as far as bending behavior is concerned the bending rigidity ofshape memory fabric was considerably more than both untreated and crease resistance finished fabrics Inoder words the bending behavior of shape memory fabric depends on polymer behavior in differenttemperatures However at temperature above glass transition temperature of the used shape memorypolymer the bending rigidity of the shape memory fabric reduced sharply to a value very similar to that ofuntreated fabric It can stated that while the shape memory fabric can not be considered as a water proofedfabric its resistance to water penetration is more than the resistance of the untreated or conventionallytreated fabricsand the untrated fabric shows the lowest resistance to water penetration Key WordsShape memory polymer Smart fabric Crease resistance Durable press Coating Permeability Bending rigidity Hydrophobicity
