Evaluation of Oak Seed as Dye Adsorbent from Aqueous Solutions Mohsen Dabbaghi Mo10 28@yahoo com 4 12 2011 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiAmir Taebi Harandi amirth@cc iut ac irAbstractEstablishment of severe environmental rules by governments and economical considerations have caused a greatattention toward removal of pollutants from industrial wastes Industrial wastewaters are large in volume andhave different qualities therefore treatment processes are complicated Dyes are among the most importantpollutants and their removal has always been an important goal in wastewater control Dye Removal fromwastewater has been performed by coagulation and flocculation oxidation ion exchange membrane filtrationand adsorption processes The best treatment choice among these methods depends on dye concentration andtreatment costs Adsorption is a suitable choice for dye removal because of its simplicity and low costs Inrecent years there has been considerable interest in the development of usage of natural adsorbents because offinancial issues Ability of oak seed as a natural dye adsorbent from aqueous solutions was evaluated in thisstudy Oak seeds were gathered from forests of chaharmahal and bakhtiary province They were grinded andsieved Aqueous dye solutions were prepared by using reactive and acidic colorant groups in differentconcentrations Four main factors including initial concentration in the range of 50 150 mg L pH in the range of 2 8 stirringspeed in the range of 80 140 rpm and adsorbent dosage in the range of 5 12 g L were selected andinvestigated to obtain the optimum dye removal conditions To achieve this goal after running primaryexperiments and choosing the appropriate levels for parameters the experiments were carried out in three parts In the first part kinetic experiments were carried out Results have shown that the equilibrium time was reachedin 360 minutes in accordance with the highest level of pH for reactive colorant 240 minutes has been detectedas equilibrium time for acidic colorant For both colorants adsorption process was described well by ThePseudo Second Order Equation Optimizing tests were carried out in second part In order to decrease the testnumber time and the costs experiments were carried out using Taguchi approach Thus L16 orthogonal arraywas selected and the experiments were done accordingly Removal efficiency in optimum condition was 54 32 for reactive red 29 and 64 62 for acid orange 7 Analysis of variance was performed and it showed thatadsorbent dosage has the most contribution in the removal of reactive colorant For acidic colorant pH isdetermined as the most important parameter Results revealed that reactive colorant group was removed with40 while acidic colorant group was removed with 50 Comparing activated carbon with oak seed in dyeremoval showed that oak seed is more capable of removing reactive colorant group than activated carbon whileit showed less adsorption capacity comparing to activated carbon when it came to acidic colorant groupadsorption Different isotherm models were investigated to match the process in the third part Langmuir Freundlich and BET isotherm models were selected The equilibrium process was described well by Freundlichmodel for both two colorant groups Key WordsAdsorption Colorant Oak Seed Taguchi
