Numerical Analysis of Blasting Wave Propagation in Continuum and Discontinuum Media Ehsan Sobhani e sobhani@yahoo com 21 May 2011 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mahmood Vafaeian e mail mahmood@cc iut ac ir Alireza Baghbanan e mail bagh110@cc iut ac irAbstractWave propagation is one the most important subjects in military mining and housing industries Blasting asa wave source is always important Due to explosion of explosives in continuum or discontinuum media remarkable amount of energy is released in a short time This energy propagates in the form of seismic wavesthrough the continuum or discontinuum media and causes its particles to vibrate A fraction of explosionenergy is consumed for rock fragmentation and a high percent of energy is propagated into the rock mass inthe form of stress wave Rock masses consist of intact rock and discontinuities such as faults joints andbedding planes The presence of such discontinuities in rock masses dominates the response of jointed rockmasses to static and dynamic loading In studies of wave effect the rock mass as the wave transmittingmedia transmits impact loads to structures supporting systems residential areas and installations The rockmass strength properties as well as rock mass discontinuities play a significant role in blast loading ofadjacent structures In this research the mechanisms of blast induced wave propagation wave attenuationand wave interaction with the major discontinuity were investigated using the UDEC code in discontinuummedia Distinct Element Method DEM approach and the FLAC3D code in continuum media FiniteDifference Method FDM approach Keywords Numerical analysis Wave propagation Wave attenuation Rock mass Discontinuity
