73 Assessment of Soil Pollution at Landscape Level Case Study of Nahavand Domains Rouhallah Afraz Email address r afraz@na iut ac ir Date of Submission 24 04 2011 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Dr Alireza Soffianian soffianian@cc iut ac ir Dr Mahmoud Rreza Hemami mrhemam@cc iut ac irAbstractHeavy metal contamination of soil resulting from technology development and population increment especially in industrial part of the world is a cause of serious concern due to the potential healthimpacts of consuming contaminated produce and is known as one of the major environmentalproblems because of its effects on human crops and ecosystem health The main goals of the presentresearch were to mapping five soil heavy metals As Cd Cu Pb Zn and assess possible sources ofheavy metal contamination such as industrial activities agricultural application and also miningactivities and assessing the relationship between landscape patterns including Number of Patches Edge Density Largest Patch Index Fractal Dimension and soil heavy metals in Nahavand Hamadanprovince in Iran Twenty eight soil samples from a total surface of 158112 ha were systematicallycollected from the top 0 20 cm of the soil in fall 2008 and the concentration of heavy metals wasmeasured IDW was applied for mapping the heavy metals concentration and mean of elementsconcentration was then calculated in hexagonal nets For quantifying landscape pattern variousmetrics such as NumP ED LPI AWMPFD and Pland were calculated in patch and landscape scalebased on the classified imagery Pearson correlation test and regression analysis were applied forassessing relationship between landscape indices and soil heavy metals concentration The comparisonof the soil heavy metal concentrations with the maximum value admitted by the universal standardshas also been made The results showed that geographic information system can fully display thespatial patterns and relationships among landscape indices and concentration of soil heavy metals inthis study area Landscape metrics number of patches edge density and largest patch index fractaldimension and percentage of cover can nicely interoperate structural patterns of the study area Theresults of Pearson correlation coefficient showed that landscape metrics are able to illustrate impactsof anthropogenic activities in the study area The results of correlation analysis illustrated that thecorrelation coefficient between some of the landscape metrics and the heavy metals are significant Results of landscape analyses also revealed impacts of human activities on Arsenic concentration inthe study area Arsenic was mostly recognized in urban and industrial zone but mountain andrangeland zones have lower As concentration however we found evidence that origin of Ca Cu Pband Zn is mostly related to natural background which represents that the heavy metal concentration isderived from parent materials in the study area The comparison of the soil heavy metal concentrationswith the maximum value admitted by the universal standards revealed that concentration of As and Cuin the region soils is more than universal standards The results of multivariate regression analysisshowed that fractal context weighted by area have more ability for indicating intensity of humanactivities rather than other metrics Therefore it is more suitable for assessing interrelation patterns ofthese soil heavy metals landscape and human activities This study is among the few pilot efforts thatemploy geospatial methods to examine the relationship between landscape characteristics and soilpollutions Keywords Landscape Patterns Heavy Metals Soil Hexagonal nets Mosaic Analysis
