121 The Effect of Merus Ring and Irrigation Water Salinity on Some Characteristics of Water and Soil in Trickle Irrigation Khadijeh Barati Kh barati@yahoo com Date of submission September 13 2011 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiB Mostafazadeh Fard Professor Supervisor behrouz@cc iut ac irAbstractDue to low rainfall and shortage of renewable water resources especially in recent two decades the use oftrickle irrigation systems which improve field irrigation efficiency is recommended The main problem withtrickle irrigation is the emitter s clogging which is caused by different materials Merus ring is one of the newmethod which can prevent corrosion sedimentation and biological clogging The Merus ring affects thephysical and chemical characteristics of water This study was performed in the field located at IsfahanUniversity of Technology to investigate the effect of Merus ring on emitter s clogging and chemicalcharacteristics of soil under trickle irrigation system Two main treatments of irrigation water with Merusring and without Merus ring and three sub treatments of irrigation water salts were used The experiment waslaid out with a complete randomized block design with three replications The experiment was run for threemonths and each treatment was irrigated for three hours every day During the experiment emitter sdischarges were collected at four periods of time and samples from emitter s discharges to investigate thevariations in chemical characteristics of irrigation water were collected at two periods of time includingmiddle and end of the experiment To study the effect of Merus ring on chemical characteristics of soil undertrickle irrigation soil samples were taken at four periods of time during the experiment from the soil beneththe emitter belonging to one of the irrigation water salinity treatment The results showed that the effect ofirrigation water treatment on electrical counductivity calcum ions and also Langelier saturation index ofirrigation water are significant at 1 level The values of the above parameters were higher for treatment ofwith using Merus ring as compared to the treatment of without using Merus ring The values of electricalcounductivity and ions of calcium magnesium sodium and bicarbonate of irrigation water were decreasedwith time during the experiment for both irrigation water treatments The decrease of the above values werehigher for treatment of without using Merus ring as compared to the treatment of with using Merus ring Theresults showed that the irrigation water treatment had significant effect on average emitter s discharge at 1 level The average emitter s discharge was higher for the treatment of with using Merus ring as compared tothe treatment of without using Merus ring For both irrigation water treatments the average emitter sdischarge decreased with time during the experiment but the decrease was higher for the treatment ofwithout using Merus ring as compared to the treatment of with using Merus ring The irrigation watertreatment had significant effect on electrical counductivity of soil saturation extract at 5 level The electicalcounductivity of soil saturation extract was lower for the treatment of with using Merus ring as compared tothe treatment of without using Merus ring The results showed that the use of Merus ring in trickle irrigationreduces emitter s clogging and causes higher soluble salts and leaching of salts to the lower soil depths Keywords Trickle irrigation Merus ring emitter s clogging Uniformity of distribution Chemical characteristics of soil
