Application of Natural and Synthetic Absorbent Materials for Improvement of Wastewater Quality in Groundwater Recharge Mina Baki mina bagi@yahoo com Date of submission September 18 2011 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiJ Abedi Koupai Assoc Prof Supervisor koupai@cc iut ac irAbstractSoil aquifer treatment SAT is a proven technology for improvement of wastewater quality Artificial waterrecharge technique is frequently used to renovate domestic effluents for potable and non potable purposes in manycountries especially in arid and semi arid regions The method involves the flow of wastewater through the soilmatrix of the unsaturated zone and in the aquifer thereby improving its quality Water quality is substantiallyimproved via the integrated functions of biological chemical and physical processes in the vadose zone andsubsequently in the aquifer In this research forty SAT columns with an inner diameter of 9 cm and a height of 1 5 m were operated 140 days toinvestigate the dependence of the treated water quality upon the soil texture different wetting drying cycles andthree different additives Basic oxygen furnace slag BOFS hematite and zeolithe that we mixed with the soil inthe columns It is common practice to operate SAT infiltration basins under a cyclic wetting and drying regime soas to restore infiltration rates and assist in the removal of nitrogen phosphorus organic carbon and othercontaminants present in the infiltrate Treated effluent from the Shahin shahr wastewater treatment plant was usedfor saturating the soil columns Water samples were collected from column outlets at regular intervals during thetests with treated effluent Collected samples were analyzed for pH EC phosphate nitrate calcium magnesium chlorine bicarbonate cadmium and lead The results indicate more than 91 of phosphate and 100 of cadmium and lead removed after 3 cycles ofexperiment The materials in the columns acted well for removing heavy metals from wastewater Phosphateremoval occurs during SAT by adsorption on clay and silt lenses and by chemical precipitation The concentrationof nitrate in samples of the columns with longer cycles was significantly less than columns with one week cyclemanagement Infiltration rate and the length of wetting period are important parameters affecting nitrogen removalefficiency of SAT columns Denitrification performance of the columns decreased significantly when theinfiltration schedule was switched from 14 days wetting 14 days drying to 7 days wetting 7 days drying cycles The concentration of anions in all samples increased with time The concentration of calcium and magnesium in thesamples were more than wastewater effluent and decreased with time The Hydraulic conductivity of all columns decreased with time and then recovered after every period of dryness Clogging of surface soil due to suspended solid created water pond The average pH of inflow was 7 56 and ofoutflow was 8 07 This indicates a general increase in the pH values when compared with the inflow In order to compare 3 absorbent materials the batch method was conducted using metal concentrations in solutionranging from 25 to 500 mg L The absorbent materials were really effective in removing cadmium and lead fromsolutions The Isotherm model of Freundlich proved a better fit in terms of the coefficient of determination R2 thanLangmuir model Key words Soil aquifer treatment wastewater reuse heavy metals hematite zeolithe Basic oxygenfurnace slag
