Assessing Soil Management of C Sequestration in Different Soil Textures of Rafsanjan Pistachio Orchards Student s Full Name Rozita Hadadrezaie E mail Address Roze had88@yahoo com Date of Submission 17 September 2011 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor s Name and E mail Address M A Hajabbasi hajabbas@cc iut ac ir AbstractUsing artificial methods to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is costly therefore the mostpractical and economical solution to confront this climate change crisis may be C Sequestrationvia the plants Soil management and intrinsic factors such as texture especially clay content havethe main influence on the amount and rate of decomposition of plant debris and ultimately on Csequestration Additionally quality and quantity of organic matter will be changed by factorssuch as tillage intensity texture and clay type the initial soil carbon aggregate distribution andweather conditions This study examined the effects of different agricultural managements andsoil texture on the quality and quantity of particulate organic matter and carbohydrates in somepistachio orchards of Rafsanjan Two regions with different textures of SCL and SL andmanagement practices were selected to compare OM characteristics in soil Also the effect of 1kind of management in 2 textures SCL SL examined separately In every zone soil sampleswere taken from two places of under the shade and unshaded areas with 3 depths 0 5 5 15 15 30 cm In soil samples EC pH N OC C N MWD POM carbohydrate CH SIR weredetermined In the shades of SCL texture the amount of carbohydrate was higher than SL texture while POM in SL was higher In both shades and unshades SCL texture had more protectioneffect regarding microorganisms than SL texture The MWD in SL on the shade were more thanunshaded places In the SL texture in the management1 kosarrize harandi carbohydrates wereless than management 2 and 3 kosarize barkhordari sedaghat garden The POM in shadedplaces over management 2 was less than the 2 other managements The amount of CH in SCLtexture shaded places and management 1 were more than management 2 3 In the shaded placesthe amount of EC N OC CH SIR were shown to be decreased with depth In the secondpart of this research with using independent characteristics EC pH N OC C N sand clay the pedotransfer functions with 2 ways of regression and neural networks of thedependent characteristics MWD CH POM SIR were estimated The results showed that EC N OC C N had positive relation sand negative relation with CH The increase of OC N Sand and the decrease of EC caused to POM to be increased The C N and clay hadpositive and sand negative relation with the SIR The OC EC had different effects on SIRthat were dependent to management condition and soil texture The neural networks could onlymake a model for CH with acceptable accuracy R2 0 74 Probably it is necessary to have moresamples for more neural networks models Key words organic matter POM SIR Carbohydrate MWD pedotransfer function
