Study of Dart Production in Steelmaking Converter and Evaluating Physical and Mechanical Parameters Marzieh Ebrahimian m ebrahimian@ma iut ac ir Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Ahmad Monshi a monshi@cc iut ac irHossein Edris h edris@cc iut ac irAbstractProducing a device for retaining slag in the converter is consider in this study A device for separation of slagand its retention in a tapping converter which consists as a closure The device has a density higher than slagand lower than the steel It submerges between the slag and steel that called slag dart Slag dart consist of tailand head head has a higher density than tail The tail goes in to the tap hole and the head approaches the holeuntil closing it It was studied to produce the dart from two castables with bauxite and high alumina Calciumaluminates cement was used as a binder Bauxite base castable had mullite shape phases inside the poresrespectively The factor n 0 22 in Anderiasen Equation and 8 wt cement had a strength higher than highalumina base castable The effect of 20 wt of 5 and 1 mm steel balls on physical and mechanical propertiesshowed that smaller size provides better distribution and higher strength Sample produced using 1 mm sizesteel balls also showed less expansion cracks and better corrosion resistance The density of castable in tailwas increased from 2 4 to 3 6 g cc Sample produced using 2wt steel fibers of 0 5 cm diameter increases thecompressive strength from 45 to 52 MPa When the melt goes through the hole vortex is developed and slaginters the ladle before the tap finished Tail has a task to stop the process Modeling was performed by woodand oil and water with 1 3 of actual size to investigate this effect The test was performed by 12mm height ofoil on top of the water and 10mm of that goes out of the hole with water By using the wooden dart only 3mm of oil could exrte before the hole was closed by head Keywords Slag dart Slag Clean steel Converter Castable high alumina
