Effects of Plot Sizes and Shapes on Sample Size for Estimating Vegetation Cover in Accordance to Vegetation Spatial Distribution in Rangelands of Freidan Isfahan Eftekhar Baranian Kabir e baranian@na iut ac ir September Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiMehdi Bassiri bassiri em@yahoo comHossein Bashari h bashari @yahoo comAbstractThis study aimed to evaluate effects of plot size and shapes on sample size with considering spatial pattern ofvegetation in order to measure vegetation cover in a range type dominated by Astragalus verus and Bromustomentellus in Feridan Isfahan Four range places in one individual site with similar ecological and vegetationcondition were selected Measurements were conducted in two main stages To determine vegetation spatialpattern four m reference sites were randomly selected by m All perennial species were counted andtheir coordination were recorded accordingly Random systematic sampling method was used to determineaverage distance between plants including Closest individual and Nearest neighbor method These methodswere applied along five tanscets with o meters lengths total meters Individual plants were counted inquadrates Spatial patterns of vegetations were determined using three methods including Point Pattern Analysis Spatial Indices Hopkines Pielou Johnson and Zimer Indices and Quadrate Indices Green and MorisitaIndices Results indicated that perennial species had randomized spatial patterns due to the relativelyhomogeneous environmental characteristics of studied area It seems that point pattern analysis had betteraccuracy than other used methods in this study With sufficient sample size and appropriate quadrate size andshape quadrate indices had acceptable accuracy Hopkines index had more precision to determine spatial patternof vegetation than Johnson Zimer and Pielou indices It indicated that spatial indices based on the plant to plantdistance Nearest neighbor method had more precision than indices that derived from point to plant distance Closest individual Plot size and shape and also sampling method are mainly affected by type of vegetation andthe distance between plants Selecting appropriate size and shape of plots enhance the sampling efficiency andreduce sample variance To evaluate shape and size of plots on sample size square rectangular and circle plotswith and square meters size were used to measure vegetation cover in studied range places with randomspatial pattern Six transects with meters lenghts were established in all range places using randomsystematic sampling method According to results there were no significant differences between studied plotshapes but plot size had significant difference All plot shapes with square meters size had more precision thanother studied size based on their coefficient of variations Rectangular square meters plots size require smallsample size than other plot sizes and shapes Key wordsvegetation cover plot size and shape sample size spatial patern Feridan Isfahan
