The Effect of Climate Precipitation Regime and Data Record on the Bhalme Mooley Drought Index in Iran Sepideh Pourhossein Email address sepidehpourhossein@yahoo com Date Of Submission February 13 2012 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Dr Saeed Soltani Email ssoltani@cc iut ac irAbstract Drought is a natural climatic phenomenon However drought characteristics differ betweendifferent areas but it happens in all climatic zones including arid and humid regions It isimportant therefore to recognize assess analyzes and monitor it in Iran Sixty two synoptic andclimatologic stations were selected in this research based on corrected De Martonne classes anddifferent drought indices were considered including Bhalme Mooley drought index BMDI standarized drought index SPI and percent of normal precipitation index PNPI Also theeffects of climate precipitation regime and data record on the different indices was studied Forassessing the effect of precipitation regime Bhalme Mooley drought index were calculated fordifferent time scales 5 7 9 12 months and for assessing the effect of data record it wascalculated for 16 26 31 36 year periods at the beginning and end of data record The resultsshow that BMDI is mostly applicable for humid climates but in the arid climates it could be usedjust for 5 7 9 12 month time scales All of the indices showed the best potential for using insub mediterranean regime Trend Analysis showed the beginning 31 years period to be the bestdata record which also was approved by Cluster Analysis Key words Drought Bhalme Mooley Drought Index Corrected De Martonne Classes Standarized Drought Index and Percent of Normal Precipitation Index
