AbstractGerbera is one of the most important cut flowers in the world that its production is increasing continually One of themajor problems in raising gerbera is a decrease in vase life specially in winter and non standard greenhouseconditions In order to decrease this problem Gerbera flower growers usually use high concentrations of nutrientsolutions With the development of floriculture industry and the need to increase the quantity and quality of flowers it is required to use useful elements in flower production Silicon is one of the beneficial minerals In this study theeffect of adding silicon from potassium silicate and nano silicon in order to estimate their effect on the flowerproduction quality and vase life of a gerbera variety called Yanara were tested in Isfahan University ofTechnology In this experiment potassium silicate and nano Silicon in various concentrations were applied in sevendifferent treatments including spray of nano Silicon in two concentrations of 12 5 and 25 mg l base on SiO2 drenchof nano Silicon in two concentrations of 12 5 and 25 mg l base on SiO2 drench of potassium silicate in twoconcentrations of 25 and 50 mg l base on SiO2 and control in three replications Flower characteristics includingthe numbers fresh weight and diameter of flowers diameter and length of the cut flowers scape were recordedduring the experiment conducting post harvest experiment flowers kept in 450 ml distilled water with 24 2 0Ctemperature and 40 4 percent relative humidity and with 13 hours light period The vase life water content dryweight relative fresh weight and the neck bending of flowers were measured Several physiological factors weremeasured including the relative leaf chlorophyll content The potential of xylem water in petioles and peduncles therate of photosynthesis transpiration water use efficiency of photosynthesis stomatal conductance and understomatal carbon dioxide Results showed drench of 25 mg l nano silicon lead to 42 2 percent increase in number offlowers compared to the control While the vase life and the diameter of inflorescences were not affected Usingnano Silicon and potassium silicate reduced in water potential of peduncle compared to the control but it did notinfluence vase life Concentration of 25 mg l nano Silicon compared to the control showed 12 3 reduction inflower fresh weight and led to 21 8 and 23 7 decrease of flower stem s length than potassium silicate in theforms of drench and spray Respectively 25 mg l of potassium silicate concentration to 22 8 increase in flowerstem length more than control group and also increased water content of flowers 2 12 more than drench of nanoSilicon with 25 mg l concentration Also drench application the of 25 mg l nano Silicon and potassium silicate respectively reduced 17 3 and 15 6 fresh weight of flower comparation to the control Concentration of 25 mg lnano Silicon relative to the control showed 12 3 reduction in the flower fresh weight and decreased 21 8 in theflower stem s length compared to the potassium silicate with the same concentration The drench and spray of 12 5mg l nano Silicon lead to12 1 and 13 5 percent reduction in flower fresh weight compared to the control 12 5 mg lconcentration of sprayed nano Silicon increased of 19 9 more relative chlorophyll compared the control Too 50mg l potassium silicate concentration increased 8 2 neck bending of gerbera In general the differentconcentrations of nano Silicon and potassium silicate did not have any significant effects on the photosyntheticparameters such as transpiration photosynthesis water use efficiency and stomatal conductance The overall impactof nano Silicon on the studied traits was much more evident than the same concentrations of potassium silicate Cosidering phytotoxicy effects of nano Silicon in high concentrations It might be of desirable effect if applied inlower concentrations Keywords Potassium Silicate Nano silicon Vase life Quality of the flowers the number of flowers
