Evaluation of Underground Space Permanent Support System Using Polyolefin Fiber Shotcrete Barchip Fiber Sayed Hasan Khademi Date of Submission 2011 11 26 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Dr L Faramarzi Dr R BagherpourAbstractIn order to lack of space the usage of underground structures for passive defense areexpanded therefore the selection of materials in consideration of economic and safety isnecessary Concrete and shotcrete are used extensively in underground structures In addition shotcrete has been used extensively in most parts of the world for a wide variety of applicationsincluding new construction in the repair and rehabilitation of older and deteriorated structures inslope stabilization as retaining walls for large excavations and for tunnel lining etc Concreteand shotcrete are brittle materials hence reinforcement of them to achieve high ductility is veryimportant Addition of steel bars and steel mesh aids to converting the brittle characteristics to aductile one But in long term in humid condition steel is rusted that lead to creation aosteoporosis concrete and shotcrete So it is necessary to replace other artificial materials insteadof steel In addition in steel mesh applications the installation of steel mesh SM can bedifficult time consuming hazardous and expensive Also lining quality can be poor i e nouniform bond between shotcrete and rock forming low quality shadow areas behind the wire andbadly placed reinforcement due to irregular mesh positions etc By contrast fibers eliminate theneed for conventional concrete reinforcing steel welded wire mesh or the chain link mesh andthis alone results in a significant enhancement of the ease of shotcrete placement In addition fibers impart toughness or energy absorption capability to hardened shotcrete resulting inimproved deformability In this research for reinforcement of concrete and shotcrete we useBarchip fiber advantages include no rusty a reduction of cracking and enhancements toductility impact resistance and toughness In addition Reduced fire damage anti spalling alongwith economic benefits of reduced placement labor and overall savings in reinforcement costs In this research the effect of barchip fiber on ductility behavior and strength properties ofconcrete and shotcrete are studied Results has shown that barchip fiber have significant effecton shear strength tensile strength adhesion strength and ductility behavior of concrete andshotcrete in addition barchip fiber increase friction angle but reduced Compression Strength thatwith added microsilis the effect of barchip fiber on Compression Strength is decrease Theresults of direct shear test show that with increase fiber the increase of shear strength in concreteis up to 13 and in shotcrete is uo to 15 In addition Adhesion strength and Friction angle alsoincrease up to 6 and 13 for concrete and 16 10 for shotcrete In this research tensilestrength of concrete and shotcrete that reinforced with Barchip fiber is defined with Braziliantest The results show that with increase fiber the increase of Tensile strength is up to 20 rather
