Feeding Habits and Growth of the King Soldier Bream Argyrops spinifer in Coastal Waters of Bushehr Province Persian Gulf Mehri Ghanbarzadeh m ghanbarzadeh@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 02 15 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Nasrollah Mahboubi Soofiani soofiani@cc iut ac irYazdan Keivany keivany@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this study the feeding habits age and growth of the king soldier bream Argyrops spinifer Forsskal 1775 were investigated using 622 specimens males females unidentified and unsexed collected from coastalwaters of Bushehr province Persian Gulf between May 2010 and April 2011 Total length of females andmales ranged from 13 5 to 64 2 cm and from 15 to 61 20 cm respectively Of the total number of examinedstomachs 57 were empty Vacuity index VI 9 2 This percentage varied significantly P 0 05 over theyear with a maximum number of empty stomachs recorded during the spring and a minimum recorded duringthe winter The diet of the king soldier bream was composed of 52 different prey species belonging to 9 mainclasses The most important prey items were Mollusca Bivalvia and Gastropoda Arthropoda Malacostracaand Crustacea and Teleostei Diet composition showed little seasonal variation Gastropoda Bivalvia Malacostraca Crustacea and Teleostei were the most important prey items in all seasons Sex did not appear tohave any significant effects on the diet composition and the main prey items consumed by both males andfemales Similarly fish size showed no significant effects on diet composition although the average size ofprey increased with fish size Regarding the results the king soldier bream could be considered a carnivorousfish feeding on a wide range of prey items The age of male and female A spinifer ranged between 2 to 25 and2 to 21 years respectively The growth of A spinifer was described by a von Bertalanffy growth curve withthe parameters K 0 061 L 82 10 cm TL t0 2 39 years for females and K 0 082 L 67 90 cm TL t0 2 88 for males and K 0 065 L 75 50 cm TL t0 3 21 for total population There was a positivecorrelation between total length TL and weight W A spinifer that was described by W 0 054TL2 681 r2 0 983 for females and W 0 060TL2 648 r2 0 983 for males and W 0 054TL2 682 r2 0 983 for totalpopulation Regarding the b values obtained both sexes showed a negative allometric growth The growthperformance index was estimated at 6 02 and 5 94 for females and males respectively indicating a fastergrowth rates for female A spinifer Key words Argyrops spinifer feeding habits age growth Persian Gulf
