Investigation of Effective Parameters on Formation and Strength of Rubber Steel Bonding of NR SBR Blend Mohammad Mahdi Ghazali mm ghazali@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Rouhollah Bagheri bagheri@cc iut ac irAbstractRubber bonding to metal surface is essential for production of many rubber goods Having enough practicalinformation about the main factors effecting on strength of rubber bonding can lead to a good performanceof rubber metal composites These materials are widely used in automobile and tire industries To achievestrong rubber metal bonding use of bonding agents in rubber compounds or primer adhesive coating onthe metal surface is essential The main purpose of this work was to achieve a very strong bonding betweenrubber and steel surface by studying the effect of a number of bonding agents and adhesive coatings on thesteel surface A formulation from Matinkimia Co Isfahan based on NR SBR containing various bondingagents was used and the prepared compound were cured on the surface of the pretreated steel first series ofsamples Effect of curing temperature C C C on the properties of the compounds wasstudied Temperature at C was selected as the best Pretreatment of the steel surfaces was carried outboth chemically and mechanically The effect of various temperature and humidity on adhesion strength ofthe samples containing bonding agent was studied Another series of samples prepared using the baseformulation and some adhesive coatings plus a primer coating on the adhesive layer i e layers on thepretreated steel surface The NR SBR compound was cured on this substrate Adhesion strength and strippingstrength of the samples series were measured according to ASTM D method D and ASTM D method B respectively Humidity thermal resistance effect of adhesive thickness surface pretreatmentand curing temperature on these strengths were investigated The presence of resol nickel naphthenate inthe samples caused and increase in adhesion strength stripping strength and elongation atbreak respectively compared with the sample without bonding agents Existence of zinc stearate in thesample could act as a protective factor against moisture showing stripping strength up to higher than thereference sample Also the heating test results showed that the nickel naphthenate has been able to preventdecrease in adhesion strength The adhesion strength test data showed that the m adhesive thickness ledto the highest strength Comparison of different adhesives showed that the presence of Chemosil adhesives in the samples resulted in the highest strength adhesion and stripping The SEM micrographs ofthe stripping test samples showed that the samples containing resol and nickel naphthenate or mixture ofthem had a lower level and size of the voids Keyword Natural rubber styrene butadiene rubber rubber steel bonding adhesion strength stripping bonding agent humidity curing
