Simulation of Skin Burn Injury Induced by Radiation Heating Marjan Zare marjan zr64@gmail com Date of Submission 02 28 2012 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Professor Ebrahim Shirani e shirani@cc iut ac irAbstract Comprehension of the phenomenon of heat transfer and related thermomechanics in soft tissues is of greatimportance It contributes to description of high thermal radiation on biological bodies specifically thermomechanical damage to tissue and a variety of medical applications Presence of blood and its thermalroles in living tissues such as blood perfusion convection perfusion of arterial venous blood throughcapillaries and physiological processes including metabolic heat generation and also heat conduction andinteraction with environment make this process complicated One of the most difficult problems of heattransfer estimation in living system is the assessment of the effect of blood circulation The vasculaturegeometry and mathematical description of convective heat transfer in tissues are very intricate problems Thisstudy investigated the significance of blood vessels in living tissue which its surface is subjected to radiationby a novel approach to evaluate convective heat transfer between blood in vessels and the tissue across thevessel walls The objective of this simulation is to reflect the structural reality of skin and blood vessels andto analyze the heat transfer The governing equation is that of Pennes Bio Heat Transfer Equation Here theconvective heat exchange between pre arteriole post venule vessels and the tissue across the vessel walls isconsidered Furthermore characteristics of blood which is considered to be a non Newtonian fluid isestimated based on Power Law model In order to evaluate transient convective heat transfer between thetissue and vessels temperature distributions in three dimensional space are obtained by solving continuity momentum and energy equations numerically The pervious works apply a constant Nusselt number which isderived based on steady condition to evaluate heat transfer between vessels and tissue In this paper weconsider the skin as a three dimensional structure including three layers embedded with multi level bloodvessels i e artery and vein The countercurrent vessels with circular cross section area are considered to beoptimally branched The diameter ratio of the branches is determined based on extension of Murray s Law Cube Law as well as length doubling rule is applied for determination of blood vessels lengths in differentlevels Moreover the angle of vessel branches is evaluated based on physiological principle of minimumwork to the angle Using temporal temperature field the skin damage is represented as a chemical rate
