115 Water Quality Assessment of Choghakhor Wetland Using Qualitative and Biological Indices Pejman Fathi Cheghasiyahi Email address p fathicheghasiyahi@in iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 02 22 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Eisa Ebrahimi e ebrahimi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe Biological and ecological studies of the water resources are one of the most importantsubject in researches and scientifically assessment For this purpose identifying the ecosystem Organisms and environmental factors are the first step of this scientifically researches Waterquality assessment through permanent monitoring is the base of a program for controlling anddecreasing of pollution Biological communities are extremely sensitive to water quality and theyinfluenced by pollutant factors Therefore they could be considered as an water quality s index inwater ecosystem The use of Benthic macroinvertebrate as a bioindicator is the most practicalmethods of water quality assessment Choghakhor wetland is located in a special climate status central Iran plateau in Chaharmahal Bakhtiari province This wetland was recorded as theinternational wetland in the Ramsar convention and has particular importance Despite havinggreat socio economical and ecological importance for the local residents and ecological for birds especially in winter so far no complete program regarding The health assessment and suitablemanagement for this wetland has been done The present investigation is focused on the use ofsome bioindicators to evaluate the water quality of Choghakhor wetland In order to estimate thequalitative indices WQI BMWP HBI ASPT richness indexes and macroinvertabrate diversity ten stations were chosen as they covered whole surface of Wetland In order to analysis ofphysicochemical factors and identification of benthic organisms water and sediments samplingwere done with the frequency of every 45 days from may to march 2010 Water Quality Index WQI was Measured using eleven water quality parameters including Nitrate Nitrite Alkalinity Hardness Turbidity Conductivity Dissolved Oxygen Ammonium Total Dissolved Solid pHand Biochemical Oxygen Demand The result of WQI showed that Choghakhor water quality isnot in a good condition and during the studied period the water quality was evaluated as very poorand inappropriate classes using WQI index so that is not suitable for human uses such asdrinking By using of BMWP index the water quality was classified into two groups of averageand bad condition Water quality was categorized in two qualitative classes of average and severepollution according to ASPT index Water quality analysis was performed using HBI index Theresults showed two different groups of almost poor substantial pollution and poor verysubstantial Finally Shanon diversity index showed that water quality was in average pollutiongroup All the evaluated indexes reported simulate results indicating that the Choghakhor waterquality differed from average to bad It seemed be biomonitoring of water quality at a least periodof 2 years could give us better result in relation to water quality parameters In conclusion currentstudy demonstrated that all the used indexes are appropriate for Choghakhor water qualityassessment After adapting to countries climate condition they could be used for other wetlandsas well especially WQI index Keywords Bioindicators Diversity Indices WQI Benthic Macroinvertebrate Choghakhor Wetland
