Study of Flexural Behavior of Roller Compacted Concrete of Pavement Reinforced by TRC Composite Saeed Nowroozi s nowroozi@cv iut ac ir February 15 2012 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Morteza Madhkhan Email address madhkhan@cc iut ac irAbstractRoller compacted concrete is such as a concrete with zero slump that is compacted by rollers Although at thefirst time using Roller Compacted Concrete RCC was limited to massive structural works such as damconstruction but the trait of RCC to obtain high strength particularly at low ages causes to concentrateattention of experts to use RCC in pavements construction that called RCCP On the other hand the trait of RCCP to decrease pavement construction costs and accelerating constructiontime caused to be done many researches in relation to the role of RCCP in great design aims Reinforcing thistype of concrete with armature is impossible due to a lot of limitations For this reason researchers have beenalways about to find a method for improving ductility and flexural resistance One of these practical methodsis using steel fibers as a part of mixing design They have found out steel fibers increase ductility but theyhave not much effect on rupture modulus since steel fibers in concrete are unpredictable and the concrete ispartially reinforced and also realization of this concrete has high difficulty finding a more efficient method isnecessary In this paper an innovative method that uses glass fiber textile for improving rupture modulus ofroller compacted concrete in pavement has been studied Fine grained concrete has used for sticking textile to roller compacted concrete in pavement This processincludes two steps The first step is making concrete with fine grains and second one is knitting glass fibertextiles that are resistant against alkaline environments TRC To decrease or avoid the phenomena of tensileweakening and shear lag epoxy resin impregnating of textile is necessary before to be embedded in concrete Epoxy resin can penetrate into the yarn and among the filaments and makes the filaments conglutinate as awhole viz a yarn To develop the bond the sands were scattered on the surface of a part of textile beforeepoxy resin hardened and when epoxy resin hardened the sands were stucked on it in this test So in some ofspecimens this method was used The soil method was used to find the mix design of roller compacted concrete in pavement For compactingconcrete the kango vibrating hammer has been used Required optimum moisture value for mix design andfinally the mix design of RCCP was obtained Construction of experimental specimens had two phases Atthe first phase the TRC was placed at bottom of the mold and at the second one the RCCP was compactedon it In this research one way flexure of roller compacted concrete in pavement using 350 100 100 mm prismaticspecimens was investigated Furthermore two way flexural behavior was evaluated by circular slabspecimens with 600 mm diameter and 100 mm thickness The results showed suitability of innovativemethod high efficiency of using fiber glass textiles to increase loading ultimate deflection and enhancementof energy absorption of experimental specimens Key Words Roller Compacted Concrete in Pavement Fiber Glass Textile Fine Grained Concrete OneWay Flexure Test Two Way Flexure Test
