Metallurgical Characterization and Economical Evaluation of Duplex Stainless Steel Copper Dissimilar Joints Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Email address mahdavi303@yahoo com Date of Submission 21 September 2011 Department of Materials Engineering IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language Farsi Degree M Sc Superviso s Name Morteza Shamanian Associate Professor shamanian@cc iut ac ir Naser Mollaverdi Assistant Professor naserm@cc iut ac irAbstract In this study metallurgical properties and economical aspects of duplex stainless steel copper joints werestudied The goal of this research is simultaneous utilization of high thermal conductivity of copper and highstrength of duplex stainless steel In aerospace industry the increase in temperature of combustion enginesleads to increased efficiency of energy In addition rapid cooling of engine body is favorable Here duplexstainless steel copper joints can be a good choice The direct welding of copper to duplex stainless steel isdifficult due to large differences between melting point thermal conductivity and thermal expansioncoefficient of copper and duplex stainless steel penetration of molten copper into the steel grain boundary high solidification rate of copper and also severe oxidation of copper at high temperatures Here a nickelbase Inconel625 interlayer was used to solve these problems Nickel has desirable solubility in both of basealloys The ERCuNiCr was used as a filler metal In this regard gas tungsten arc welding GTAW processwas selected The microstructure and mechanical properties of joints were evaluated using opticalmetallugraphy scanning electron microscopy equipped with EDS and tensile tests The results showed thatafter direct welding of base alloys white colored point are observed in welding zone indicating insufficientmelting The porosity and hot cracks were also detected These defects reduce strength and reliability ofwelds By using interlayer the welding defects can be eliminated and acceptable strength is achieved In thiscase the rupture occurred at base metal weld metal interface which shows the high strength of the welds Asa result welding of nickel alloy to stainless steel and then welding of nickel alloy to copper provides goodmetallurgical conditions Cr Fe Ni intermetallic compounds were formed when nickel alloy was used asinterlayer Here the use of pure nickel instead of Inconel 625 is recommended to eliminate intermetallicphases due to absence of Cr Further economical investigations showed that metal inert gas MIG is the mostcost effective process due to high deposition rate Keywords Duplex Stainless Steel Copper alloy Dissimilar Welding Interlayer Economical Study Mechanical properties
