127 Synthesis and Characterization of Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced by Ni P Coated Steel Fibers Hamid Heidari H heidari@ma iut ac ir November 8 2011 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiRahmatollah Emadi remadi@cc iut ac irMasoud Panjepour panjepour@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this research aluminum based composites reinforced by different steel wires were synthesized usingconventional infiltration process at 0 5 and 1 5 volume percent of reinforcement Four kinds ofinterconnected wires including stainless steel wires low carbon steel wires aluminized steel wires and Ni Pcoated steel wires with different meshes were applied Considering interfacial reaction and properties inmatrix fiber interface is tremendously important In the case of aluminum matrix composite reinforced bysteel fibers Fe Al intermetallic phases play essential role in determining mechanical properties of composite In present study the effect of the presence and absence of Fe Al intermetallic phases on the mechanicalproperties of the composites was investigated A failure happened in the synthesis process of stainless steelwire reinforced composite because of wires mesh size The mesh size of stainless steel wires was so smallthat aluminum melt did not infiltrate into the mould properly and infiltration process did not take placecompletely A 5 8 6m layer of Ni P coating was deposited on steel wires using Electroless Process Ni Pcoating on wires was evaluated by optical and scaning electron microscopies Tensile and micro hardnesstests were applied on composite samples to evaluate mechanical properties Furthermore Microstructuralproperties of composites were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopies and EDS analysis Theresults showed that tensile strength of Ni P coated wire reinforced composites were improved in comparisonwith monolithic samples Also no noticeable reduction in elongation of Ni P coated wire reinforcedcomposites was observed The tensile tests of aluminized steel wire reinforced composite showed the lowestelongation and the highest tensile strength among other composites Intermetallic phases of Fe Al producedas a result of high temperature contact of Fe and Al are brittle and hard Microstructural results showed thepresence of intermetallic phases such as FeAl3 Fe2Al5 and Fe3Al in the interface of aluminum Steel wires Itseems these phases improved the strength of the composites reinforced by aluminized steel wires It wasobserved from EDS analysis that Ni P coating hindered the diffusion of Al and Fe atoms resulted in a Fe Alintermetallic free interface The effect of intermetallic phases in interface on the mechanical properties wasinvestigated by heat treating the aluminized steel wire reinforced composite for 6 hours at 5007C Thealuminized steel wire reinforced composite which subjected to heat treatment for 6 hours at temperatureabout 5007C showed the highest values in yield strength and ultimate strength among other composites Inthis research it was resulted that presence of Fe Al intermetallic phases increases strength and hardness andalso decreases considerably elongation of composite In contrast presence of Ni P coating in interface willlead to improvement of strength and maintaining ductility of composite Key Words Aluminum Steel Fiber Metal Matrix Composite Infiltration Ni P Coating Mechanical Properties Interface
