Effect of Nano Silica on Mechanical Properties of Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene Compounds Tahereh Alsadat Tabaei t tabaei@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission 2012 03 04 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Roohollah Bagheri bagheri @cc iut ac irAbstractIn this research the physico mechanical properties and thermal stability of chlorosulfonatedpolyethylene CSM rubber filled with nano and micro silica particles 5 20 phr which preparedby using base formulations has been investigated The mixing of rubber compounds was carriedout in a two roll mill The mixing time was 20 min The vulcanization was carried out in anelectrically heated laboratory hydraulic press at 155 C The physico mechanical properties liketensile strength elongation at break compression set hardness and abrasion resistance have beenstudied For all cure characteristics the nano silica filled samples had higher values than microsilica filled samples Also samples with 5 phr micro silica particles and 15 phr of nano silicaparticles had higher cure characteristics values Results showed that in the samples with 5 phrmicro silica particles and 15 phr of nano silica particles the ultimate tensile strength UTS were8 1 and 43 2 higher than the reference sample respectively Increase of the nano and microsilica particles concentration led to decrease in the abrasion resistance of the samples Thehardness and modulus increased with increasing nano and micro silica loading and had highervalues for nano silica filled samples The results of swelling test showed that the crosslink densityincrease with increasing of nano and micro silica loading Also SEM images of the latest samplesshowed that the agglomeration of the filler particles and voids in the polymeric matrix weretrifling in compare to other samples The swelling test and SEM images confirmed the results thatmentioned above In the continuation the effects of adding 5 15 phr of nano silica particles onthe physico mechanical properties in the hybrid samples containing 5 phr micro silica particleswas investigated The ultimate tensile strength of 5m 5n 5 phr nano silica 5 phr micro silicaparticles sample was 27 4 higher than reference sample In addition effects of 50 and 100 surface modification on UTS of 15 phr nano silica particles sample were investigated Thermogravimetric analysis TGA results showed that the 10 mass loss temperatures of thethree samples which containing 5 phr micro silica particles 15 phr of nano silica particles and 5phr nano silica 5 phr micro silica particles were 52 2 9 3 and 1 5 C respectively Weight precentof the remainder of these three samples were 23 3 15 5 and 18 1 respectively while the weightprecent of the remainder of reference sample was 12 The sample containing 15 phr nano silicaparticles was recognized as a sample with best properties and coated on a roller Keywords Chlorosulfonated polyethylene CSM nano silica abrasion resistance mechanical properties thermal resistance
