Investigating some Characteristics of Flow in Rectangular Side Sluice Gate Marzieh Esmaielzade Ashini m esmailiashini@gmail com Date of submission February 26 2012 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiManouchehr Heidarpour Prof Supervisor heidar@cc iut ac irSaeid Eslamian Assoc Prof Supervisor eslamian@ndrd org saeid@cc iut ac irAbstractA side sluice gate is a measuring diversion structure set into the side of a channel It is used to allow part of theflow to spill through the side Side sluice gates can be used in irrigation and drainage systems urban sewagesystems sanitary engineering and as head of discharge regulator The flow through a side sluice gate is a typicalcase of spatially varied flow with decreasing discharge In this type of flow the amount of discharge is reducedalong the main channel It should be noted that depends on flow regime at upstream of sluice gate subcritical orsupercritical profile of water surface and in the neighborhood of sluice gate and also control section will bedifferent In this study the hydraulic characteristics of 12 physical models of side sluice gate in subcritical flowwere considered To this aim discharge coefficient profiles of water surface variations of specific energy alongside sluice gate three dimensional velocity distribution in main channel direction of velocity vectors angles ofoutput jet along sluice gate and variations of velocity under different conditions of flow were investigated Theresults showed that the highest values of longitudinal velocity Vx at the distance of 3 centimeters from side ofchannel occurred near the beginning of the side sluice gates while the lowest values of this component ofvelocity took place at the end of the side sluice gate After passing of flow at sluice gate Vx again increaseduntil it got the constant value Variations of Vx along the side sluice gate at distance of 10 centimeters from sideand central line of channel are similar to those of distance of 3 centimeters from side of channel but they littlebe decreased The analysis of the vertical velocity Vy at the distance of 3 centimeters from side of channelshowed that before and after the side sluice gate its values are negligible and in the presence of side sluice gate they increase severely The maximum of Vy was observed in upper edge of side sluice gate and direction of V yat all points is from the water surface toward channels floor The values of Vy at distance of 10 centimeters andcentral line of channel are negligible Cross velocity Vz has low values before and after side sluice gate and inthe present side sluice gate the maximum value of Vz occurs at the channels floor The values of Vz at distanceof 10 centimeters and central line of channel are lower as compared to the distance of 3 centimeters from side ofchannel The effects of Froud number height and length of side sluice gate on velocity profiles were alsoinvestigated at three dimensional profiles The results show that the increase of Froud number causes thedecrease of Vx from upstream to the beginning of side sluice gate and increase of Vx from side sluice gate centerto downstream Also the increase of Froud number causes the decrease of Vy and Vz near side sluice gate whileincreasing the amount of height and length of side sluice gate causes the increase of Vx from upstream to thebeginning of side sluice gate and decrease of Vx from side sluice gate center to downstream Also the increaseof two parameters increases Vy and Vz at the near of side sluice gate In this study some equations are alsopresented to determine the side discharge side discharge coefficient and angel of output jet Keywords side sluice gate distribution of three dimensional velocity discharge coefficient water surfaceprofiles angle of output jet
