Vertical and Horizontal Variability of Selected Heavy Metals and Magnetic Susceptibility in Zob Ahan Industrial District Isfahan Salman Naimi Marandi Sn marandi@yahoo com Date of Submission August 22 2012 Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language farsiSupervisor Dr Shamsollah Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac irAbstract Due to increased industrialization the problem of environmental pollution has increased for severaldecades Among numerous soil pollutants heavy metals are especially dangerous due to their toxicity andpersistence in the environment and public health concerns The accuracy of heavy metal spatial distributionmaps is critical for risk assessment and planning Chemical approaches for evaluating soil pollution aredifficult expensive and destructive Recently magnetometer methods which are quick inexpensive and non destructive have been proposed as a proxy for assessing the heavy metal pollution of soil The objective ofthis study was to determine the vertical and horizontal variability of selected heavy metals and magneticsusceptibility in Zob Ahan industrial district Isfahan For this purpose 202 profiles were dug and describedin the green landscapes of Zob Ahan industrial site a using gird sampling method Soil samples were takenfrom depths of 0 30 60 90 and 120 150 cm After preparation the magnetic susceptibility lf and hf andconcentration of total lead Pb zinc Zn manganese Mn iron Fe copper Cu nickel Ni cobalt Co and chromium Cr were measured in the soil samples Frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility fd was also calculated by the ratio of magnetic susceptibility in low and high frequencies Selected soilchemical and physical properties including calcium carbonate equivalent organic matter gypsum pH electrical conductivity sand silt clay and cation exchange capacity were also determined to recognize therelationships between magnetic susceptibility and soil properties The contamination factors and theirs mapswere used to define pollution and distribution of heavy metal in the study area According to the results ofthe contamination factors the studied area in regards of contamination by heavy metals was ranked asfollowing Pb Zn Mn Fe Cu Ni Co Cr Results of this study showed that soil surface has beenenriched by ferrimagnetic particles The presence of ferrimagnetic particles of anthropogenic origin was alsoconfirmed in the clay fraction of polluted surface soils by scanning electron microscope and EDS analysis Results showed that the concentration of Mn Fe Zn and Pb in the soil surface 0 30 cm has been affectedby anthropogenic sources such as industrial activities while concentration of Cu Ni Cr and Co are mainlycontrolled by parent material The concentrations of Mn Fe Zn and Pb in the depth of 0 30 cm werepositively correlated with magnetic properties lf and lf which could be attributed to an input fromindustrial activities while Co concentration showed negative significant correlation with magneticproperties Moreover the Tomlinson pollution load index showed a significant correlation with the magneticproperties lf and lf Magnetic properties were shown to be highly effective for investigating industrialpollutants The results also suggested that magnetic methods could be used to estimate the heavy metalcontamination from anthropogenic sources in industrial soils Keywords Heavy metals Magnetic properties Soil pollution Contamination factors industrial activities Steel mill
