96 Study of Genetic Diversity of Agronomic Traits in Iranian and Foreign Safflower Carthamus tinctorius L Genotypes Rasoul Dehghan Kouhestani r dehghankouhestani@ag iut ac ir Date of Submission 26 August 2012 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mohammad Mahdi Majidi majidi@cc iut ac ir Ghodratollah Saeidi gsaeidi@cc iut ac irAbstractConservation and sustainable use of genetic resources is essential to meet food security Success incrop improvement generally depends on the magnitude of genetic variability in the germplasm Inorder to study genetic variation for agronomic traits in a collection of Iranian and foreign safflowergenotypes an experiment was performed at the research farm of Isfahan University of Technologyusing a simple lattice design of 10 10 with three replications in 2011 In this experiment 83 foreigngenotypes along with 17 Iranian genotypes were evaluated Agronomic and morphological traitsincluding days to 50 flowering days to maturity plant height number of branches per plant headdiameter number of heads per plant number of seeds per head 1000 grain weight grain yield perplant seed yield per m2 biological yield harvest index seed oil content and oil yield were assessed The result of analysis of variance showed that genotypes differed significantly for all of the studiedtraits Foreign accessions showed better performance for number of heads per plant and had lower daysto flowering days to maturity and plant height indicating that foreign germplasm can be used inbreeding programs to improve these traits High broad sense heritability and low differenc wereobserved between genetic and phenotypic coefficients of variation for most of the traits The highestbroad sense heritability was belonged to 1000 seed weight 95 and the lowest one was estimated fornumber of branches per plant 68 Genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients showed thatnumber of branches per plant number of heads per plant number of seeds per head and head diameterhad positive and significant correlation with seed yield The results of stepwise regression showed thatnumber of heads per plant number of seeds per head and 1000 grain weight explained 87 percent ofseed yield variations According to the results of path analysis number of heads per plant had the mostdirect positive effect on seed yield however its effect was declined through indirect and negativeeffect of number of seeds per head and grain weight Factor analysis recognized four factors whichexplained 82 percent of total variations These factors were named as efficiency physiological source phenological factor and yield component of grain weight Cluster analysis base on the agronomic andmorphological traits grouped the genotypes into four clusters which comprised 59 8 5 and 28genotypes respectively Iranian accessions was clearly separated from other genotypes and allocated infourth group In conclusion the results indicated that there was a broad genetic diversity amongIranian and foreign germplasm which can be exploited in breeding programs Key Words Agronomic traits foreign genotypes genetic diversity safflower
