Assessment of application of ramp metering in highway in order to improve performance conditions in peak hour case study Kharrazi Multilane Highway in Isfahan Yusuf Mahyapoor ymahya@gmail com Date of Submission September 9 2012 Department College of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M SC Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Sayed Mehdi Abtahi m abtahi@cc iut ac ir Advisor M SC Ghodrat Eftekhari eftekhari229@yahoo com AbstractRamp metering or ramp control has been developed as a traffic management strategy toalleviate congestion on freeways It aims to enhance freeway throughout improve traveltime reliability and safety Ramp metering is an effective method of freeway trafficcontrol which limits the number of vehicles entering the freeway with the help of a pulsingmeter at on ramp Its philosophy is to maintain optimal freeway operation by regulatingon ramp demand to be at or under its capacity Various methods have been proposed tocalculate the metering rate that determines the number of vehicles allowed to enter thefreeway from on ramps On basis of the operational mode these strategies can becategorized as fixed time or traffic responsive On the basis of the operational level thesestrategies can be categorized as local or area wide ramp metering The aim of this study is to assess the effects of ramp metering on performance conditionsof traffic flow at three levels network highway and ramps on ramp and highway sectionat upstream of on ramp The Shahid Kharrazi Highway in Isfahan is used in this study Inthis study the north to south bound from Jomhoori Square to Vahid Bridge is selected fordevelopment and evaluation of ramp metering Ramp controls were developed andevaluated using Microscopic Traffic Simulation AIMSUN NG Microscopic trafficsimulation is applied in this study as it provides a cost effective and reliable means toevaluate performance of ramp metering strategies Data collected from filed surveyingwere used for the development of the Shahid Kharrazi Highway model After calibratingand validating of model is done Samadyeh on ramp is selected for implementation oframp metering strategies This on ramp was controlled with fixed time plan and ALINEAalgorithm ALINEA ramp metering algorithm is a traffic responsive local ramp meteringthat uses feedback regulation to maintain target occupancy of the freeway mainline For
