Experimental Studies on Static and Dynamic Behaviors of Amino Based Resin Grouted Sands Arian Shakibzadeh a shakibzadeh@cv iut ac ir April 24 2012 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor M A Roshan Zamir Assist Prof mohamali@cc iut ac ir Supervisor A M Halabian Assist Prof mahdi@cc iut ac ir AbstractIncreasing strength and durability in addition to reducing compressibility porosity and permeability of soil havealways been the main objective of ground improvement techniques In this case there have been many problemswith loose granular soils because of their low strength parameters and bearing capacity high permeability and theexisting problems in excavation There are many methods to treat and stabilize these kinds of soils like retainingstructures micro pile nailing and grouting Grouting is one of common methods for improving static and dynamicbehaviors of granular soils in which the voids of soil are filled with injecting a fluid to increase strength and reducepermeability of the soil Chemical grouts were developed in response to a need to develop strength and controlwater flow in geologic units were the pore sizes in the rock or soil units were too small to allow the introduction ofconventional portland cement suspensions The main purpose of this laboratory project is to investigate the effectiveness of using an amino based resin as a newchemical grout on static and dynamic behaviors of soil This amino based resin can be grouted in saturated units andhas two required properties of a good chemical grout ability of controlling gel time and decreasing its viscosity Thisresin is used for grouting for the first time in this study It showed good results in case of soil stabilization and as anadditive to bitumen A uniform graded saturated sand with different relative dry densities Dr 50 70 and 90 were subjected to this resinous grouting Soil samples were cylindrical shaped with 5 cm diameter and 10 cm heightGrouting procedure was based on ASTM D4320 standard test method for laboratory preparation of chemicallygrouted soil specimens for obtaining design strength parameters Grout was injected to both saturated and dry soils After grouting the dry samples were cured in 25 C room and wet samples were cured under water until test day In order to investigate the grouting effects on the soil the specimens were subjected to different tests including onedimensional unconfined compression test on wet and dry samples permeability test on wet samples determination ofcompression pulse velocity of wet and dry samples unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression test on drysamples consolidated undrained triaxial compression test on wet samples and cyclic triaxial test on wet samples The results illustrated very good effects of grouting on static and dynamic properties of soil Dry density of soilincrease by about 10 and permeability of soil reduced about 100 times Internal friction angle dose not affect bygrouting greatly but a significant cohesive developed in soil specially in dry state Undrained cyclic triaxial tests wereperformed to study dynamic behavior of grouted sand Cyclic compression behavior of samples was investigated indifferent frequencies and different dynamic load amplitudes The hysteretic behavior of grouted sand was studiedwith the number of loading cycles Two dynamic properties studied are the shear modulus and the damping ratio Theresults illustrate good cyclic resistance of grouted samples Shearing stress amplitude relative density of soil andfrequency of loading significantly affect the properties of samples keywords Chemical grouting permeability unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression test consolidated undrained triaxial compression test cyclic behavior dynamic behavior
