The Effect of Iron Sources and Rates on Yield and Yield Components and Quality of Durum and Bread Wheat Hamide Ghafari Ghafari hamide@gmail com Septamber11 2012 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor JamshidRazmjoo Krazmjoo@ cc iut ac ir AbstractWheat makes major staple food of people in many countries including Iran Therefore grain quality of wheat isof great importance to human health The Fe plays an important role in the crop yield and quality Therefore this experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar application of iron rate on yield and quality ofbread wheat Triticum aestivum L and durum wheat Triticumdurum L A field experiment was carried outduring the two growing seasons 2010 and 2011 at the Lavark Research Farm of College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran A factorial experiment based on complete randomized blockdesign with three replications was used Experimental treatments were two wheat cultivars Pishtaz bread wheatand Line D 85 15 5 durum wheat and three sources of Fe fertilizers including nano iron oxide 1 and2 1000 ironchelate 2 and 4 1000 and iron sulphate 2 and 4 1000 and control No spraying Foliar spraywas done at stem elongation and flowering stages Plant height spike length number of spikes m2 number ofgrains per spike 1000 grain weight biological yield grain yield harvest index and grain protein iron andcarbohydrate contents and leaf chlorophyll a b and total and carotenoid contents and leaf activity ofantioxidant Catalas CAT Peroxidase POX and Ascorbat peroxidase APX enzymes were measured Analysis of variance showed that foliar application of iron fertilizers had significant effects on measured traits Iron sulphate foliar application at 4 1000 rates significantly enhanced number of spikes m2 1000 grain weight grain yield harvest index and grain carbohydrate content at 1 level as compared with the control Ironsulphate fertiliter application also increased grain yield and harvest index about 29 2 and 23 percent respectively Nano iron oxide fertilizer in addition to increasing yield and yield components increasedchlorophyll a b and total contents grain protein and iron contents Grain produced under application of 1 1000nano iron oxide and control contained 18 05 and 11 55 protein respectively Application of iron chelatefertiliter had lower effects on all measured parameters as compared with nano iron oxide and iron sulphate Alliron sources fertilizers increased CAT and APX enzymes activities but they had no significant effect on POXactivity There was a positive correlation between number of spikes m2 1000 grain weight grain yield harvexindex grain protein and carbohydrate percent grain iron content and CAT and APX enzymes activities withiron fertilizers foliar application Foliar application of iron was more effective on increase grain yield harvestindex and chlorophyll a b and total content of bread wheat compared with durum wheat Whereas application ofiron fertilization increased grain protein grain iron content and grain carbohydrate percent of durum wheatmore than bread wheat The results showed that the foliar application of 1 1000 nano iron oxide increased grainprotein percent chlorophyll a b total and a b content grain iron content and leaf antioxidant activity CAT andAPX yield and yield components wheat therefor nano iron oxid fertilizer with this rate is suggested for wheatproduction in this and similar areas Key words Bread and durum wheat foliar application iron grainyield and protein percent
