Frictional behavior modeling of tire slip proof cover fabric Fahime Esfandiari f esfandiari@tx iut ac ir July 2012 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Saeed Ajeli Mohammad SheikhzadehAbstractWith increasing use of electronic systems in vehicles and knowledge of that improving vehicle performanceand safety are together then optimal functioning of these equipments would be very important For manyyears usage of metal chains on a car s tire to prevent slip in adverse conditions on the road was common Recently with increasing the use of electronic brakes like ABS afford damage because of this equipment isnot acceptable any more Tire chains are actually impairing performance of ABS brakes and the vehiclesuspension tires and if they have contact with the asphalt then roads are also damaged As a result theseconditions would provide situation to finding a replacement for this kind of car s accessories One of theways that recently took attentions is a structure of textile as the anti slip cover for tires These equipments donot need Jack to install and uninstall so being easily installed made them rapidly spread Textile structure thatgoing to used for this purpose must have specific criteria Fabrics are under such a condition that it will beapplied at the same time tensile stress shear and abrasion and the thermal stress that is caused by friction Fabric must have sufficient strength to achieve the desired goal because if textiles don t will be able towithstand the stress rupture tire actually makes contact with the road surface and the cover s operation willimpair Another important feature that going to associated with this type of textiles is being light and easy totransport then polypropylene fibers can be useful for this purpose but should be noted that the usage of PPfibers alone could cause problems because cover will be under thermal stresses and polypropylene has lowmelting point In order to offer optimal characteristics of textiles that going to uses as an anti slip cover forcar s tire different samples of fabric were studied Examples include polypropylene and polyester hightenacity fabric polypropylene fabric high tenacity nylon fabric polyester fabric and polyester fibers in aspacer warp knitting fabric Properties of these samples were studied and were tested in strength and surfaceproperties Fabric for parameters and eventually all the cases were investigated for tensile strength Toinvestigate the frictional properties of textile and fabric friction coefficient under the standard conditionswere testing According to the special working conditions for this kind of textiles we use additional frictiontests between the fabric and asphalt fabric and snow and fabric and ice then static and kinetic frictioncoefficients were determined for each of these scenarios Cover of those structure have been prepared on thetire with 165 65R13 size then all samples get Installed with similar conditions on the car s brake testerdevice that one of the tires we put anti slip cover on the one of tires from the drive shaft in the end allsamples were visually examined The model was created by finite element method and using ABAQUS 6 11to move the coated tire with anti slip cover on the road and simulate different conditions For this reason anddue to the different types of samples in this study 108 situations were considered for the model model werechanging by different surfaces roads linear and angular velocity of the tire and the tire longitudinal slipcoefficient The comparison between experimental results and visual observations were performed with themodeling and behavior of textiles under the terms of their application as an anti slip cover for tire wasdiscussed Key WordsSlip proof cover fabric Finite element method Friction Braking tester
