69 Evaluation Optimum Condition Solvent Extraction of Molybdenum with LIX984N Maedeh Taghva ema tgv@yahoo com Date of Submission 2012 05 02 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Mehdi Ahmadian assistant professor ahmadian@cc iut ac ir Mohammad Hossein Fathi professor fathi@cc iut ac ir Abstract Molybdenum is strategic metal with special properties and important applications With ceaseless exploitation of world Molybdenum resources high grade reserves are getting depleted on a daily basis Primary supplies are presently insuf cient for ful llment of the world demand Molybdenum commonly exists in the nature as the mineral molybdenite MoS2 The main commercial sources of molybdenite are Porphyry deposits of copper During the floatation of fine copper ore the molybdenite concentrate is separated from copper concentrate This molybnenite concentrate contains 85 93 molybdenum sulfides Low grade ore is hence inevitably exploited Morever the envoromental pollutions besides wasting the valuable materials as two main challenges in pyrometallurgical prosses have brught up the tendency twovards the hyrometallurgycal prosses A hydrometallurgical treatment involving solvent extraction of molybdenum is investigated to recover molybdenum The molybdenite concentrate is leached with sulfuric acid producing leach liquor which is subjected to solvent extraction This study is carried out on the solvent extraction to separate molybdenum from the leach liquor Hydrometallurgical metods can be used for the production of copper and uranum and low grade ore of metals Solvent extraction SX is an effective method that can be applied to separate and recover the metals of interest from a leach liquor Mo in the sodiom molybdate liquor were extracted by solvent extraction method at different pH values In the solvent extraction study the effects of several operational parameters like contact time pH values extractant concentration and different stripping reagents were examined to establish suitable conditions to an effective extraction and stripping of molybdenum The number of required stages for extraction anwere determined from a McCabe Thiele diagram and con rmed by a counter current simulation study Mo VI into the loaded organic phase was achieved with 20 v v LIX984N at equilibrium pH A O 1 1 The effect of pH on the extraction of molubdenum at different temperatures has been investigated extraction was achieved at the end of 60 minuts The most suitable extractant for molybdenum is 20 v v LIX984N selected and pH was Extraction of molybdenum increased with increasing pH between 0 2 0 5 Optimal pH was 0 5 to 2 in this pH extraction increased up to 90 and after pH 2 5 decreasing extraction Also in this project concetration of organic phase chenged from 5 to 30 extraction increased up to 10 and then it stated constant In addition the McCabe Thiele diagrams for the extraction were investigated The quantitative extraction of molybdenum was obtained in 2 stages at A O ratio of 1 1 with 20 LIX 984N and at one stage extracted 90 The experiments were carried out at temperatures of 30 40 50 and 60 C at The best temperature extraction was 96 Molybdenum extraction is endothermic The values of enthalpy for molybdenum was determined to be 60 12 kJ mol respectively The stripping of molybdenum loaded LIX984N was quantitative using NH4OH NH4 2CO3 and NH4Cl So using a mixture of 1M NH4OH 1M was the best for stripping The stable complex MoO2R2 formed during extraction which supports the cation exchange mechanism was con rmed by IR spectral analysis Keywords Molybdenum Solvent extraction LIX984N Sulfate solution
