Effect of Shade Organic Matter and Planting Time on Morphological and Physiological Characteristics of Eustoma grandiflorum Raf Shinn Maedeh Rahnemoon far Maedeh rahnemoon@gmail com septamber 16 2012 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Assist Prof N Etemadi Etemadin @cc iut ac ir Assist Prof A Nikbakht anikbakht@cc iut ac ir Abstract Lisianthus Eustoma grandiflorum is an ornamental plant that belongs to the Gentianaceae This plant is mainly grown as a cut flower In recent years dwarf type bedding cultivars are produced These cultivars have been widely cultivated because of wide variations in their colors and long length of flowering period Light quality quantity and duration affect plant growth and development Growth and qualirty of ornamental plants such as lisianthus may be reduced in urban landscapes due to the presence of trees and buildings shade This experiment was conducted to study the effect of shade organic matter and planting time on the flowering and qualitative and quantitative characteristicsof lisianthus as a bedding plant A factorial arrangement based on completely randomized design was conducted in the greenhouse of Isfahan University of Technology including 3 treatments and each one consisted of 3 replications in 2012 Treatments consisted of two levels of shade 50 and 70 two planting dates 3May and 2June and three levels of organic matters 0 5 and10 Kg of manure per square meter Data Analysis was performed on the base of Analysis of combined experiment of a combination of planting time shade tratments The results showed that 70 shade caused a significant reduction in plant height number of flowering branches number of open flowers per branch flower diameter flowering duration relative chlorophyll content soluble sugar content photosynthesis transpiration water use efficiency the number and length of roots and shoot fresh and dry weights but caused a significant increase in number of days from planting to flowering intercellular CO2 concentration and root diameter as compared with 50 shade Planting lisianthus seedlings in May caused a significant increase in number of days from planting to flowering stomatal conductance transpiration intercellular CO2 concentration soluble sugar content and the length of root However this planting date decreased chlorophyll content and water use efficiency Application of organic matter increased the number of flowering branches shoot fresh and dry weight and length of root However no significant difference were observed between 5 and 10 Kg organic matter per square meter There was interaction between shade and organic matter treatments on chlorophyll soluble sugar water use efficiency root length and shoot fresh and dry weight Interaction of shade and planting time also affected transpiration the number and length of root and shoot dry weight As far as organic material and planting time is concerned water use efficiency and shoot fresh weight were affected Interaction between shade and organic matter and planting time only influenced root length Shade reduced the number of flowering branches and open flower in brancbranches by the reducing the photosynthetic rate and soluble sugar Overall results suggested that 50 shade planting in May with 5 kg cow manure per square meter may provide the best conditions in terms of number of flowering branches and flowering period for lisianthus var matador Key Words Lisianthus shade planting time organic material flowering branches
