91 Investigation of Structural and Magnetic Properties of Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy with x 15 16 Fabricated by Mechanical Alloying Method Student Name Vahidreza Zahedi E mail address v zahedi@ph iut ac ir Date of submission October 16 2012 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Parviz Kameli Kameli@cc iut ac ir Abstract Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy samples with x 15 16 were prepared by mechanical alloying method In the case of x 16 sample crystal structure size and shape of particles and distribution of elements in this compound with different milling times were investigated by using X ray diffraction SEM images and X ray maps respectively After 20 hours ball milling of initial powder it was shown that the obtained powder contains a mixture of martensite and austenite phases In order to obtain a single phase sample the part of powders was annealed at 800 C and 900 C and then it cooled to the room temperature by two ways the first one cooled slowly and the other one quenched in ice water In this process it was shown that sample annealing causes an improved crystal structure and improves the magnetic properties especially for the quenched sample in which the main structural phase is L2 1 and the ac magnetic susceptibility behavior shows both the structural and magnetic transitions in this sample By investigating the effect of annealing temperature on the structural and magnetic properties it was shown that increasing the annealing temperature improves crystal structure and magnetic properties and the single phase samples were obtained In the case of x 15 sample 20 hours milling of initial powder results in the single phase sample with L2 1 structure The annealing and quenching process on this sample show that increasing the annealing temperature improves the structural and magnetic properties of the sample In addition the effect of sample melting was studied on these two compounds It was shown that after melting a quite stable structure is formed in these materials so that sample annealing and quenching cause no effective change on the structural properties although in the case of x 16 sample a wide transition was observed in the ac magnetic susceptibility behavior
