70 Abundance and Diversity of Phytoplankton in Some Water Resources of Yazd Province Azar Moradi Pour E mail azarmoradipour@yahoo com Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran 84156 83111 Degree M sc Language FarsiO Farhadian Assist Prof Supervisor omfarhad@cc iut ac irAbstractThe phytoplankton is comprised of a diverse assemblage of organisms which characterized by theirtiny size and drifting mode They are the first communities that respond to alterations of water qualitywhich made them as useful indicator The objective of this study was to determine abundance anddiversity of phytoplankton in some water resources of Yazd province during four seasons Samplingwas carried out during one year period from summer 2011 to spring 2012 from ecological differentlocations by water collection The physico chemical water characteristics including temperature pH electric conductivity EC and dissolved oxygen were measured in situ The samples were fixed using4 formaline and then identification enumeration and composition of phytoplankton genera werecarried out in laboratory Results showed that 6 classes and 79 genera of phytoplankton were presentin Yazd water resources The phytoplankton composition were include 28 25 11 8 5 and 2 generafrom Chlorophyceae Bacilariophyceae Cyanophyceae Conjugatophyceae Dinophyceae andEuglenaophyceae respectively The dominant phytoplankton genera were Cosmarium Cyclotella andPolycystis in spring Rhizosolenia Clamydomonas and Anacystis in summer Rhizosolenia Nitzschiaand Pleurococcus in autumn Cyclotella Cymbella and Gyrosigma in winter The maximum meandensity of phytoplankton was measured in genera of Bacilariophyceae 10712 cells ml and minimumin Euglenaophyceae 15 cells ml Biovolume of phytoplankton was obtained according to measuredsize and shape Maximum biovolume were estimated in autumn 168 3 m3 ml and minimum inwinter 0 11 m3 ml The highest diversity of phytoplankton was obtained in summer 6 classes and 32genera while the lowest diversity was observed in winter 4 classes and 11 genera Comparisonsbetween stations in relation to physico chemical parameters showed that reserved ponds duringsummer had highest amounts of Shanon Wiener index 2 65 Simpson diversity index 0 06 andMargalef richness index 5 7 Results based on water quality phytoplankton abundance andcomposition illustrated that water originated from aqueduct well and spring classified as oligosaprobwaters Furthermore the phytoplankton collected from waters with origin of fish ponds and artificiallake and agriculture earthen ponds classified as mesosaprob and mesosaprob waters respectively The most important water quality factors attributed to changes on phytoplankton community werewater temperature and EC Overall findings of this research illustrated that water resources of Yazdhave suitable diversity of important phytoplankton which they could be used as water quality indicatorand also microalgal live food production for aquaculture industry by its mass cultivation Keywords Phytoplankton Abundance Diversity Classification of Water Quality Yazd Province
