Evolution of soils developed on some igneous rocks in northwestern Iran Maryam Yousefifard E mail address m yousefifard@ag iut ac ir Date of Submission November 25 2012 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran 1st Supervisor Shamsollah Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac ir 2nd Supervisor Ahmad Jalalian jalalian@cc iut ac ir 1st Advisor Hossein Khademi 2nd Advisor Mohamad Ali Mackizadeh 3nd Advisor Meharn Shirvani Department Graduate Program Coordinator Mohamad Mehdi Majidi Associate Professor Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Professor Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Assistant Professor Department of Geology University of Isfahan Assistant Professor Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate the weathering intensity of the soils developed on igneous rocks in semiarid region of northwestern Iran using weathering indices and micromorphological and mineralogical techniques Also the main and trace elements concentration in soils developed on alkali granite granodiorite monzodiorite syenite pyroxene diorite dacite hornblende andesite and pyroxene andesite were determined to elucidate elemental transfer from parent materials to soils Ti was used as reference element to calculate elemental loss and gain The results of clay content and pedogenic iron variability as well as chemical index of alteration CIA and A CN K and MFW ternary plots showed that the soils developed on volcanic rocks hornblende andesite pyroxene andesite dacite were more weathered than those on the plutonic parent rocks The soils developed on plutonic rocks were in the primary stage of weathering with very few pedogenic calcites except for soil developed on alkali granite which contains few calcitic pedofeatures Calcitic crystallitic b fabrics and calcitic pedofeatures were found in all soils developed on volcanic rocks In situ weathering of Ca bearing minerals such as plagioclases amphiboles and pyroxenes could be the possible explanation of the accumulation of pedogenic calcite in the absence of calcareous parent rocks in these soils Micritic calcite was the dominant form in the most of the soils developed on volcanic rocks indicating a rapid precipitation of calcium Smectite kaolinite and mica illite were present in the soils developed on plutonic rocks The most abundant clay minerals in the soils developed on dacite and andesite rocks included smectite mica illite and kaolinite Smectite as dominant mineral and some kaolinite with fairly constant variation in content with depth were observed in the soils formed on hornblende andesite and pyroxene andesite This could indicate that the smectite had the authigenic origin and formed most likely from weathering of plagioclase hornblende and pyroxene The results of mass balance calculations based on the strain factors revealed that the Ca and Na depleted during weathering progress mostly from plagioclase grains In the semiarid regions Ca is precipitated as pedogenic calcite in the soil horizons K and Mg depletion was less than Ca and Na The results of trace elements transfer factor showed that As and then Pb enriched in all studied profiles In general the results on the weathering indicators major elements mass balance enrichment depletion in situ crystallization of pedogenic carbonates and the high quantities of smectite in the clay fraction
