016 Evaluation of corrosion and tribocorrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel with physical vapor deposited Ti TiN and Ti TiCN coatings in Ringer s solution Seyed Ali Naghibi Sa naghibiavanji@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission Jun 15 2013 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors K Raeissi Associate Professor k raeissi@cc iut ac irM H Fathi Professor fathi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe aim of this study was evaluation of corrosion and Tribocorrosion resistance of stainless steel 316 L withphysical vapor deposited Ti TiN and Ti TiCN coatings in Ringer s solution The characterization tests ofsurface after deposition process showed hardness values about 2600 and 3770 Vickers for Ti TiN andTi TiCN coatings respectively face centered cubic structures and same 220 growth preferred orientations The potentiodynamic polarization readings showed decrease of corrosion current density by factors of 9 and30 and increase of breakdown potential by factors of 3 and 2 for Ti TiN and Ti TiCN coatings in respect tothe substrate respectively The titanium intermediate layer has caused to increase the corrosion resistance ofthe substrate with blocking the structural defects in top coatings such as pinholes and porosities The resultsof tribocorrosion tests at open circuit potential showed a lower potential drop for the coatings due to theirnobler electrochemical behavior and also lower decreases in anodic and cathodic currents in potentiostatictests because of their higher hardness and electrochemical resistance However Ti TiCN coatingdemonstrated a better behavior than Ti TiN due to its higher hardness and electrochemical resistance Also the evaluation of track area after tribocorrosion tests indicated on decrease of track width for coated samples especially for Ti TiCN coating which was due to its more hardness and corrosion resistance Moreover thedecrease of lost mass due to deposition of mentioned coatings especially Ti TiCN coating in comparisonwith substrate was proved using roughness metering test It was found that the synergy between corrosionand wear is an important factor which determines the lost mass of the coated samples when comparedto316Lstainless steel This parameter was 43 77 5 and 78 8 of the total destruction for 316Lstainless steel Ti TiN and Ti TiCN coated samples respectively However the destruction due to mechanical process was57 22 and 21 of the total damage for the mentioned samples respectively According to the resultsobtained applying Ti TiN and Ti TiCN coatings had significant effects on enhancement the corrosion andtribocorrosion behavior of 316Lstainless steel substrate due to the decrease of mechanical damage and anodicdissolution of surface KeywordsCorrosion Tribocorrosion PVD coating Stainless steel Ti TiN Ti TiCN
