Effect of Cathode Type and process Parameters on Cathodic Polarization in Zinc Electrowinning Elham Nazeri Nazeri El@yahoo com Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors M Ahmadian Assist prof Ahmadian@cc iut ac ir Abstract Generally Zinc is extracted by Hydrometallurgy and Pyrometallurgy processes The main method for zinc production is zinc electrowinning and more than 80 of zinc is producted by this method In this research for investigation of cathode type and process factors on cathodic polarization in zinc electrowinning electrolye solution was made of zinc sulphate sulfuric acid and some industrial additives For investigation of cathode effect alominium with high purity and 2024 6061 and 1100 alloyes were used as a cathode Research showed that zinc deposition on 2024 alloy carried out in lower voltage Volgage Current diagrams for different sulfuric acid and zinc concentrations showed that increasing of acid concentration from 60 to 120 g l coused voltage decreasing and increasing of it from 120 to 180 g l coused increasing of voltage and energy consumption Also increasing of zinc concentration from 10 to 50 g l coused reduction of voltage and increasing of energy consumption and increasing more than 50 g l decreased cell voltage According to results of cathodic polarization tests increasing of temperature from 25 to 50o decreased cell voltage and increased energy consumption Photographs of zinc deposite without Arabic gum in electrolyte obtained high pore deposition but addition of Arabic gum with different concentration obtained deposite without any pore and with small grain structure Keywordes Electrowinning Cathodic polarization Cathode type Additives
