66 Ecology of wild goat Capra aegagrus in Kola Qazi National Park Author Javad Shahgholian Ghahfarokhi Email address shahgholian dhv@yahoo com 19 Dec 2012Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Mahmoudreza Hemami mrhemami@cc iut ac irAbstract Determining species ecological requirements is essential to achieving sound science basedmanagement of wildlife populations As the ancestor of domestic goat Capra hircus thewild goat Capra aegagrus is a valuable species which is distributed widely in Iran However the ecology of this species is still poorly known From autumn 2011 to latespring 2012 habitat preferences age distribution grouping behaviour and activity of wildgoat were studied in Kolah Qazi National Park central Iran over three seasons ruttingseason winter and parturition period Predetermined observation points and routes wereused to record size and composition of the sighted wild goat groups Habitat variablesincluding slope aspect exposure elevation percent cover of vegetation and percentcover of rocks and gravel were recorded wherever animals were detected This data werecompared with similar data collected between 1973 and 1976 The obtained results weresimilar for both periods Group size varied significantly between seasons and was related to group composition group activity pattern elevation percent cover of vegetation rock and gravel and windspeed Wild goats formed larger mixed groups in autumn and winter while single sexsmaller groups were more frequent in spring Sex ratio did not significantly differ between the three seasons No significant relationshipwas obtained between group composition and slope and aspect classes in any of the threeseasons Slopes steeper than 45 degree were frequently used by wild goats During winter southern aspect and in autumn and spring northern and western aspects were preferred bywild goat Activity pattern was associated with gender and season Grazing andresting laying were the most and the least frequently observed activities of wild goat respectively When analyzed separately for males and females grazing was the dominantactivity of females in all three seasons studied while walking was the most frequentlyobserved activity of males and kids Keywords habitat use age sex composition group size activity pattern sex ratio
