Optimizing CO Injection in a Compositionally Grading Iranian Oil Reservoir Shabnam Shokoohi Dehkordi s shokoohidehkordi@cc iut ac ir January 20 2013 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisor Mohammad Reza Ehsani ehsanimr@cc iut ac ir Abstract Worldwide long term trends show that conventional oil field discoveries are declining while demand for oil is increasing Enhanced Oil Recovery EOR is a term applied to methods used for recovering oil from a petroleum reservoir beyond that recoverable by primary and or secondary methods When the gas injection projects are reviewed it can be seen that non hydrocarbon gases especially CO2 is the most common injectant In any comprehensive reservoir study a very important step which is necessary to be done before estimating the fluid in place initializing reservoir simulators and planning the reservoir development is accurate assessment of the spatial distribution of the fluid components in horizontal and vertical directions The fluid composition varies with depth in many reservoirs and this phenomenon is reffered to as compositional grading which can significantly affect different aspects of reservoir development Although there are numerous studies about compositional grading and all authors emphasized that variation of composition makes variation of miscibility condition but all of them try to formulate this phenomenon based on the thermodynamic approach to reach to a proper model in order to predict composition and other reservoir fluid properties along the reservoir column and there is a lack of attention to its effects on gas injection In this study an Iranian southwest oil reservoir with low shrinkage undersaturated oil of API gravity of 30 was selected Because of nearby power plants this reservoir is a good candidate for CO2 injection A full compositional simulation model was first prepared with complete petrophysical geological and PVT data composition at different depths with respect to datum were calculated using the isothermal compositional grading model and imported into the model to simulate the case of compositional grading The optimize gas rate for the oil rate of 1500 STB d is 8 MMSCF d and the injection should done on all the layers Although the optimize gas rate for the oil rate of 2500 STB d is 10 MMSCF d and the injection should be done on the top layer Key Words Enhanced oil recovery CO2 injection Compositional grading Reservoir simulation
