Local buckling and distortional buckling of composite beams by using finite elements method Ali Vafi a vafi@cv iut ac ir Date of Submission 10 July 2012 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mojtaba Azhari mojtaba@cc iut ac ir Advisor Bijan Boroomand boromand@cc iut ac ir Abstract Composite beams are the beams made of steel and concrete Since 40s with the advent ofthe composite beams criteria in AASHTO standards there has been a growing trendtoward using these beams In composite beams mass resistance against corrosion and fireare provided by concrete and ductility and tensile strength are provided by steel In thepresent study with the contribution of finite elements method and by using elements with30 degrees of freedom and regarding the thin plates hypotheses local and distortionalbuckling are investigated In order to extract the stiffness matrices the principle ofminimum potential energy is used Both local and distortional buckling of theses beamsare investigated in elastic mode For the local buckling width to web thickness of web ratio and the width to flangethickness ratio are investigated and they are mostly inversely proportional to the criticalstress Moreover for the distortional buckling the width to web thickness ratio and the width toflange thickness ratio are examined and as a result they are generally inverselyproportional to the critical load
