۹۶ The effect of two irrigation systems and water quality on growth indices of olive trees in landscape Nabiyollah Ashrafi Nabi ashrafi@gmail com 9December 2012 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Assist Prof A Nikbakht anikbakht@cc iut ac ir Assist Prof M Gheysari gheisari@yahoo com Abstract Landscape construction management and maintenance are important issues that inrecent years have drawn much attention Landscape is of valuable because of its role inair refinement and improving people life quality One of the major limiting factors inurban landscape development is providing the plants with sufficient water One of thegeneral principles toward sustainable management of landscape and water wiselandscaping is applying of low quality water sources such as recycled water Due to thelimited water resources available the use of this resource is inevitable in agriculture andgreen space Planting trees with low water demand like olive trees is considerd bylandscape designers Convenient irrigation systems generally may cause seriousproblems when wastewater is water resource therefore new and proper irrigationsystems should take into consideration In order to investigate the impact of waterquality and its application method on olive trees an experiment was carried out during2010 2012 in Isfahan University of Technology The eight year old and one year oldolive trees were irrigated by two irrigation systems including a new subsurface leakyirrigation SLI system and surface irrigation in line with irrigation with clear andrecycled water for two years The results revealed that wastewater could enhancegrowth indices like leaves surface height shoot growth and chlorophyll content too Inaddition recycled water enhanced nutrient elements nitrogen phosphorous magnesium N P Mg in leaf of plants Applied recycled water improved photosynthesis andstomata conductance Irrigating trees by SLI system could enlarge leaves area enhancedannual growth chlorophyll content and growth of current year but decreased solublesugars and proline contents In addition SLI system enhanced total stomata number open stomata and photosynthesis Trees grown under SLI irrigation system surprisinglyshowed 76 elevation in growth when compared to surface irrigation N in trees grownunder SLI irrigation system was higher than surface system To sum up this experimentshowed that recycled water could be a promising resource for landscape trees irrigation Also SLI irrigation system is more efficient in irrigation in urban landscape whencompared to surface irrigation Key word landscape SLI irrigation system wastewater olive element stomata
