55 Inheritance of dwarfness and earliness in F2 populations of safflower under water stress and non stress coditions Kobra Espanani c spanani@yahoo com Date of submission 2 1 2013 Department of Agricultural Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi 1 M R Sabzalian Assis Professor Supervisor sabzalian@cc iut ac ir 2 M M Majidi Assis Professor Supervisor majidi@cc iut ac irAbstractThis study was conducted to investigate the dwarfness and earliness traits and the possibility of transferringthese traits from dwarf plants with low yield to tall plants with high yield and also to evaluate the effects ofdrought stress on intra specific hybrid plants The plant materials were included C4110 PI537652 and A82parental genotypes and the F2 progenies of an intra specific hybridization between parental genotypes Theexperiment was carried out as a randomized complete block design with three replications with 2 levels ofirrigation water amount included non stress irrigation after 80 mm cumulative evaporation from class A pan and stress irrigation after 180 mm cumulative evaporation from class A pan and on the F2 progenies ofintra specific crosses in 2010 2012 The results showed that there were significant differences among thegenotypes including tall parental plants with high yield dwarf parental plants with low yield and theprogenies of F2 for the height days to maturity and yield traits Mean comparisons showed that higher valuesfor all studied traits was observed on either tall plants or dwarf ones particularly height and earliness and theprogenies of F2 had middle values The drought stress significantly reduced all traits except days to stemelongation as the days to maturity height and yield were decreased to 20 42 4 16 and 56 92 percent respectively High broad sense heritability and low difference between genetic and phenotypic coefficient ofvariation showed that the most of the variation is due to genetic factors In all F2 hybrid plants two geneticgroups of tall serotinous and dwarf precocious were separated and analysis of variance showed that theeffect of genetic groups was significant for all of the traits except 100 seed weight The interaction betweendrought stress and genetic groups was also significant except for head plant the number of primary branchesand 100 seed weight Mean comparisons of genetic groups at non stress condition showed that there weresignificant difference between the genetic groups and the higher values for all traits were observed on tallgroup At drought stress conditions the same result was observed except for 100 seed weight and highervalues for all traits were observed on tall group Mean comparisons between two genetic groups at stress andnon stress conditions showed that in tall genetic group except for days to stem elongation head plant and thenumber of primary branches the other traits had higher values at non stress condition than the stresscondition Also in dwarf genetic group except for days to stem elongation 100 seed weight and height nonstress condition had higher mean values than stress condition Analysis of regression for height on earlinesstraits could separate early and late maturing and tall and dwarf groups The results showed that dwarf and tallplants are early and late maturing respectively The results of genetic analysis including chi square test andgenetic variance showed that only one single gene was effective on the control of height and earlinessshowed by A and B alleles dominant genes and a and b alleles recessive genes for height and earliness respectively Key words safflower intraspecific hybridization height earliness
