Synthesis characterization and X ray crystallography of Ni II Cu II and Zn II complexes of a new tridentate unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand Hnaphtabza and investigation of template effect and catalytic effect of anions on imine hydrolysis and recondensation to tetradentate ligand Vahideh Asadi Vahideh asadi@gmail com January 20 2013 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi M Amirnasr Prof amirnasr@cc iut ac ir Abstract In this thesis a new tridentate N2 O donor unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand Hnaphtabza has been synthesized and its reaction with NiII OAc 2 4H2O NiIICl2 NiIIBr2 3H2O CuII OAc 2 4H2O CuIICl2 2H2O CuIIBr2 and ZnII OAc 2 2H2O has been investigated 1 NiII napht 2abza 2 CuII2 naphtabza 2 OAc 2 3 CuII napht 2abza 4 ZnII napht 2abza MeOH Considering the metal template effect and catalytic effect of anions HL1 Hnaphtabza N naphthylidene 2 aminobenzylamine is hydrolytically converted to the tetradentate ligand H2L2 H2 napht 2abza N N Bis naphthylidene 2 aminobenzylamine during the reaction with all of salts except CuII OAc 2 4H2O As a result metal complexes of this tetradentate ligand Ni L2 1 Cu L2 3 and Zn L2 MeOH 4 are formed The reaction of the new tridentate ligand HL1 Hnaphtabza with CuII OAc 2 4H2O led to the formation of the dimer complex with tridentate ligand and acetate bridge Cu2 L1 2 OAc 2 2 These compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods The structures of the ligand and all complexes have been determined by X ray crystallography and the correlation between structural and spectroscopic properties are discussed Electrochemical properties of these compounds were also studied by cyclic voltammetry Key words tridentate unsymmetrical Schiff base ligand Hydrolysis and recondensation Crystal structure Spectroscopic properties
