Synthesis and characterization of orthopalladated complexes of triphenylphosphite and their catalytic applications in Suzuki cross coupling reaction Shokouh Esfarjani Shokouh Esfarjani@ch iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 1 15 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Kazem Karami Karami@cc iut ac ir Abstract A general approach has been designed to synthesize mononuclear orthopalladated complexes containing mono and bidentate ligands from the binuclear orthopalladated complex of triphenylphosphite In this way PdCl2 was refluxed with PdCl2 P OPh 3 2 in toluene to obtain the orthopalladated complex Pd Cl P OPh 2 OC6H4 2 1 which was used as a precursor to react with mono and bidentate ligands Triphenylphosphite PPh3 2 4 6 trimethylpyridine Me3Py thiourea tu and pyridine Py as monodentate ligands were reacted with binuclear precursor complex in CH2Cl2 at room temperature to get mononuclear complexes Pd PPh3 Cl P OPh 2 OC6H4 2a Pd Me3Py Cl P OPh 2 OC6H4 2b Pd tu Cl P OPh 2 OC6H4 2c and PyH Pd Cl 2 P OPh 2 OC6H4 2d respectively Also mononuclear complexes Pd Phen P OPh 2 OC6H4 NO3 3a and Pd MePhen P OPh 2 OC6H4 NO3 3b were synthesized from the reaction of binuclear precursor complex with AgNO3 in THF at room temperature and then addition of 1 10 phenanthroline Phen and 4 methyl 1 10 phenanthroline MePhen as bidentate ligands In these complexes the 1 10 phenanthroline Phen and 4 methyl 1 10 phenanthroline MePhen ligands are coordinated to the palladium center through their nitrogen atoms as chelates The complexes were fully characterized by using FT IR spectroscopy Elemental analysis multinuclear NMR spectroscopy 1H 13C and 31P and X ray crystallography Suzuki reaction is a powerful method for the formation of C sp2 C sp2 bonds under mild reaction conditions At the end the orthopalladated complex Pd PPh3 Cl P OPh 2 OC6H4 2a has been used as a catalyst in the Suzuki reaction Keywords orthopalladated complexes triphenylphosphite Suzuki reaction
