83Turn on Angle Control of Switched Reluctance Motor With the Purpose of Torque Ripple Reduction Ali Shahabi a shahabi@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 01 20 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Seyyed Mortaza Saghaian Nejad saghaian@cc iut ac irAbstract Inherent simple structure robustness low manufacturing cost fault tolerancecapability high torque to inertia ratio and possible operation at high speeds and hightemperatures are properties that make the switched reluctance motor SRM a strongcandidate for various general purpose adjustable speed applications Despite theseadvantages one of its drawbacks compared to the other conventional machines is its highertorque ripple that causes vibration and acoustic noise The doubly salient structure of theSRM makes the torque pulsations its inherent property Another cause for the high torqueripple in the SRM lies in its non linear and discrete torque production mechanism Hence the total instantaneous torque is the sum of all the individual phase torques The SRMtorque is in relation with its current and angle therefore the machine torque dependencyon its current magnitude and rotor position causes the torque ripple There are twoapproaches for minimizing the torque ripple One is improvement of the electromagneticdesign of the SRM and the other one involves electronic control techniques Properadjustment of the firing angles can be categorized as a major way of torque ripplereduction among electronic control techniques As one of the most important factors on thetorque ripple the turn on and turn off angles will be studied in this paper Properadjustment of these angles affects the performance of SRM by reducing its torque ripple Therefore in order to find a proper turn off angle a multiobjective optimization function ispresented The multiobjective function consists of two criteria of the torque ripple and thecopper loss By solving the multiobjective optimization function proper turn off angleswhich primarily reduce the torque ripple of SRM are obtained The copper loss criterion isconsidered as the second goal so that an angle among those with low torque ripples to bechosen which also cause a lower copper loss However adjustment of the turn on angle isdone by using of a proposed online process The turn on angle is adjusted in such a waythat the incoming phase current reaches the current reference value at the turn off point ofthe outgoing phase Simulation and experimental results ared presented to validate thetorque ripple reduction ability of the proposed scheme Keywords Switched Reluctance Motor Torque Ripple Reduction Comutation Angles
