125 The evaluation of carbon sequestration in planted green spaces and natural vegetation in arid region Case study Natural vegetation and green spaces of Isfahan University of Technology Behnoosh Abbasnejad Email Behnoosh abbasnejad@yahoo com 16 1 2013 Isfahan University of Technology Department of Natural Resources Language Farsi Degree M Sc Superwiser Dr Khajeddin Email khajedin@yahoo comAbstractClimate change and global warming is considered as one of the most outstanding environmentalchallenges and stems from increased greenhouse gases concentration in atmosphere includingcarbon dioxide Given to increasing trend of greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide andvitality and essentiality of its sequestration mostly for its adverse impacts on earth and human life governments and international institutions seek for developing some modern cost effectiveapproaches to address its sequestration issues in spite of high potential for carbon sequestration innatural ecosystem like forests and humid rangelands this potential is in lesser extent for sparselyvegetation of arid regions This limitation causes to environmental pollution and extreme lifecondition To create urban green space backyard however obviate this drawback diminishingpollutions to larger extent In spite of people acute demands for carbon sequestration in industrialand big cities the have been little information and research on green space values and importancein terms of carbonsequestration In the light of progressing manner of remote sensing in dataaccumulating on this context different information management methods and amorous applicationfacets of satellite data on natural and environmental sciences facilities for this technology night beexploited in cost effective and time saving manners Nonetheless so far there have been fewstudies on remote sensing technology application to assess carbon sequestration in urban area greenspace forests and rangelands within country For this we dealt with potential of carbonsequestration in constructed green space using remote sensing Study area is located in Northwestof Isfahan province covered by 2270 h and sea above level elevation of 1626 m mean participationin study area is 122 8 mm in arid climate The satellite image used in this study was taken bysatellite Quick Bird Resolution for abovementioned satellite is 0 61and 2 44 meters by sensors Panand MS respectively as a most powerful economical satellite in terms of its ground resolutionpotentiality After manipulating requiredcorrections on image and doing PCA analysis vegetationindices of NDVI RVI SAVI and TNDVI were landed on image Amount of sequestrated carbon insoil was determined following methods Walky Black in two depths of 0 15 and 15 30 cm similarly level of carbon sequestrated in vegetation biomass was estimated using measuringheight DBH small and big diameters of plants canopy according to Allometric equations Then images bands and components obtained from PCA analysis were get under regression betweeninterested parameters in carbon sequestration and vegetation indices in SPSS 15 software medium
