Comparison of Multi Criteria Evaluation MCE Methods for Agricultural Land Capability Assessment Case Study Semirom County Milad Biranvand mbbmss88@yahoo com Date of Submission 2013 01 16 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Alireza Soffianain soffianian@cc iut ac ir Abstract Water resource for exploitation by human in earth is very limited The existing limited resources are degrading mostly as results of unsystematic exploitation and abuse Lands have been subjecting to degradation affected by population growth extended anthropogenic activities inappropriate land uses deteriorating operations and exploitation on water soil and vegetation resources in turn causes to vegetation destruction erosion flooding dust storms low biodiversity and fertilized soils less yield unemployment and negative socio economical outcomes Whereby to withstand against this situation entails for a comprehensive landscape use plan water and earth in which land uses are selected in a specified framework in a reasonable manner in proportion to potential of environment In a global scale agriculture as a land use accounting for highest area than others uses causing large environmental impacts so that evaluation of farm lands might be essential It is necessary to classify agriculture lands ecological potential based on data presented for land use planning and developing and identifying appropriate points for land farm regardless to landscape ecological potential causes socio economic issues The present study was conducted in framework of Iranian agriculture land use ecological model dry farming irrigated and range management using multi criteria evaluation method MCE including Analytic Network Process ANP Bolean logic weighted and linear combination WLC and ordered weighted average OWA as per software s ArcGIS 10 1 Super Decision 2 1 4 IDRISI Kilimanjaro and Excel 2010 to determine points with agriculture land use potential in Semirom county of Isfahan province Since Semirom County has great deal of importance in province agriculture was selected as study area The effective ecological parameters in evaluating this land use potential included the physical parameters slope rainfall soil depth water level and etc and biological ones vegetation density Geographical information system was applied to map these criteria Then weights for these layers were obtained using analytic network process and Borda technique Finally the area was evaluated through integrating Bolin logic without weighting WLC and OWA criteria weight based methods approaches The results indicated that methods were varied in developing final map The first agriculture land use class for irrigation having high potential was not appeared in Bolin method but other classes were obtained in the area According to WLC algorithm the final map indicated presence of all dry farm and irrigated lands in study area OWA developed different maps mainly due to application of different operators like AND MIDAND WLC AVG MIDOR and OR to obtain final map so the obtained maps from layers pessimistic integrating to optimistic ones are different so that map from operator AND indicated no first and second agriculture classes and in contrast MID operator accounts for high proportion of region for the first class and Or one consider all area potential for first class Since it can control criteria risking and compensability OWA method is able to calculate these levels promising for decision makers with higher flexibility to make appropriate decision Keywords Multi criteria evaluation MCE agriculture land use capability multi criteria evaluation method GIS Semirom County
