Study of production of Cr3C 2 Al2O3 nanocomposite in Al matrix by mechanochemical and thermal synthesis Seiede Atefe Hashemi Email address sa hashemi@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission Jan 08 2013 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Ali saidi Professor a saidi@cc iut ac ir Ahmad monshi Professor a monshi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe requirement of materials with high strength to weight ratio leaded to the developments ofaluminum matrix composites AMCs In this research chromium carbide as candidate reinforcement due to its availability and ease of production was considered So the aim of this research was thesynthesis of aluminum matrix nano composite with alumina chromium carbide reinforcement Cr2O3 C Al and Cr C Al Al2O3 mixtures were milled at different time XRD results show that no reactionoccurs after up to 60 hours milling Compacted samples pellet of the activated powders after 20hours milling were heated at 900oC for 90 minutes The results show that only in the case of thesample that contain Cr with low amount of Al chromium carbide was produced and the hardness ofthe sample was about 8 73 GPa When Al content of the sample was higher than 20 weight percent Cr2AlC was produced rather than Cr3 C2 For the samples that contained Cr2O3 only with Al higherthan stochiometry chromium oxide was completely reduced In the case of samples with metallic Crand high amount of Al after heating at 900oC for 90 minutes the product was a mixture of Cr2AlC Cr3C2 Al2O3 When chromium oxide was used in the sample due to exothermic reduction of Cr2O3 the reaction time was only 15 minutes Keywords AMCs mechanical milling mechanochemical synthesis thermal synthesis
