Development of surface nanocomposite in Al Ni O ternary system on Al6061 alloy surface by friction stir processing and evaluation of its properties Fereshteh Adel Mehraban Email address f adelmehraban@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission 1 22 2013 Department of Materials Engineering IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisors Fathollah Karimzadeh Associate Professor karimzadeh f@cc iut ac irMohammad Hasan Abbasi Professor Abbasi32@cc iut ac irAbstract In this research two aluminum matrix surface nanocomposites were produced on the surface ofAl6061 T6 plate via friction stir processing and their characterizations were investigated One ofthem included Al3Ni intermetallic compound as reinforcement phase and the other included Al3Niand Al2O3 To produce Al Al3Ni nanocomposite two routes were developed In the first one agroove with 2 mm depth was filled by Ni powder In order to prevent the Ni from being displacedout of the groove surface repair was accomplished with a modified FSP tool that only had ashoulder and no pin Then FSP carried out on the surface of sample In the second route Ni powderwas flame sprayed on the surface of Al6061 alloy and then friction stir processing carried out onthe surface of the sample X ray diffraction pattern showed that Ni powder reacted with aluminumsubstrate and produced Al3Ni as reinforcement phase in both samples Reaction between aluminumand Ni occurred in the first FSP pass but it was continued up to 5 passes for more reaction andhigher hardness In all experiments tool rotation rate traverse speed and tilt of the spindle towardstrailing direction were kept constant as 630 rpm 100 mm min and 20 respectively Microhardnessmeasurements showed the same results for both methods So to produce Al Al3Ni Al2O3 the firsttechnique was employed but NiO powder was used instead of Ni powder XRD results showed thatNiO powder reacted with aluminum substrate and Al3Ni and Al2O3 were produced asreinforcements Microstractural examination was done using both scanning and transmissionelectron microscopies Mechanical properties of samples were characterized by microhardness tension and hot wear tests Because of T6 condition of Al6061 samples microhardness andultimate tension strength of nanocomposite samples decreased but hot wear test results indicatedimprovement of wear behavior of both nanocomposites at 400 0C Scanning electron microscopywas used for more accurate examination of fracture and wear surfaces Keywords Aluminum matrix nanocomposite Friction stir processing Al Ni intermetalliccompounds Hardness Wear
