Investigation into Finishing Insect Repellent Cotton Fabric Using Natural Products Azar Samieisefat a samieisefat@tx iut ac ir Jan 23 2013 Department of textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Dr Akbar Khoddami khoddami@cc iut ac ir Abstract Insects are considered as one of the greatest public health concerns for humans due to their inconveniences caused by their bites and also transmitting pathogens in various ways thus bringing about large epidemics A few of the diseases that are transmitted by insects can be prevented by vaccination Due to the increase of individuals awareness of health and hygiene regulations and because of the adverse effects of pesticides on human health and the environment using insect repellent textiles can have an important role in human health In this study insect repellent finish was done on cotton goods as such textile products are widely used as bed sheet and also as summer clothes Given that the textiles are in contact with the skin use of harmless repellent substances is essential So the possibility of replacing a Permethrin structure chemical composition with natural ingredients such as extract and essential oil of eucalyptus plant and essential oil of Myrtus plant Myrtus essential oil was studied In order to improve the fastness of the finish conventional textile auxiliary materials such as binder and softener were used and the impact of these substances on insect repelling properties was examined Repellency evaluation of treated samples was carried out using two methods cone test and arm in cage test Also the impact of this finish on other properties of the fabric such as air permeability and strength was compared with the properties of control sample Cone test results showed that the treated samples with ATT and samples treated with eucalyptus extract for 5 of mosquitoes and samples treated with Eucalyptus and Myrtus essential oil for more than 50 of mosquitoes have knockdown property In other words the performance of the samples treated with essential oils is much better than the samples treated with extracts and ATT chemical Results of this test also showed that the used binder and silicone softener in addition to increasing the stability of ATT repellent on the fabric have synergistic effects on ATT finishing agent so that the quantity of insect knockdown of the samples treated with these materials compared with the samples treated with just ATT was magnified more three times In the case of samples treated with Eucalyptus extract and Eucalyptus and Myrtus essential oils use of these substances did not cause any significant change in knockdown property of the samples The mortality rate from this test also confirmed the results of knockdown tests It appears that volatile materials emitted from essential oils can make necessary repellency for the insect repellent textiles The repellency evaluation results of samples with arm in Cage test revealed that protection time of the samples treated with essential oils is about 120 minutes and about 90 minutes for the samples treated with ATT So in the case of insect repulsion the samples treated with essential oils are better It seems that ATT repellent and Eucalyptus extract by acting on just insect s skin nervous system while essential oils by acting on skin nervous system couple with blocking insects humidity sensory holes cause the insects to repel So to replace the chemical repellents with natural ingredients essential oils seem to be suitable alternatives and provide acceptable performance Evaluating the samples tensile strength showed that treated samples with binder resulted in maximum reduction of average 40 due to possible formed cross links The samples air permeability showed slight changes after finishing In general the results of the research indicate that plants essential oils could be applied on 100 cotton fabrics using textile finishing methods as environment friendly
