Effect of Gibberellic Acid Spermine and Methyl Jasmonate on Breaking Potato Solanum tuberosum L Tubers and Minitubers Dormancy Zahra Mirzakhani Hafshejani Zah ho89@yahoo com Department of Horticultural Sciensces Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language Farsi Degree M Sc Mostafa Mobli mobli@cc iut ac ir Abstract At harvest potato Solanum tuberosum L tubers are dormant and will not sprout Potato minitubers also are not able to sprout immediately after harvest while dormancy period of minitubers is longer than those of seed tubers A number of physical and chemical methods have been used to break dormancy Moreover endogenous hormones have been proposed to play a significant role in tuber dormancy regulation In this experiments the effect of growth regulators on breaking of dormancy and acceleration of sprouting of potato tubers was studied Therefore 2 separate 8 2 factorial experiments were carried out in Isfahan University of technology Each experiment was conducted in completely randomized design with 4 replications of 10 tubers First experiment was carried out to examine the response of potato tubers to exogenous application of gibberellic acid 5 and 10 mg l 1 spermine 20 and 40 mg l 1 methyl jasmonate 0 001 0 01 and 0 1 mmol l 1 and distilled water as control The Second factor was 2 cultivars of potato tubers Marfona and Ramos Results showed that in both cultivars applying of GA3 SP and MJ advanced breaking of dormancy Methyl jasmonate 0 001 mmol l 1 had highest effect and 40 mg l 1 spermine was less effective Applying GA3 also increased the length of apical sprout but reduced its diameter A second factorial experiment was carried out to examine the response of potato minitubers of two cultivars Marfona and Sante to application of Gibberellic acid 50 and 100 mg l 1 Spermine 40 and 60 mg l 1 methyl jasmonate 0 01 0 1 and 1 mmol l 1 and distilled water as control Results showed that applying GA3 and MJ advanced breaking of minitubers dormancy and methyl jasmonate 1 mmol l 1 showed highest effect Applying GA3 100 mg l 1 in increased the length and decreased the diameter of apical buds Applying methyl jasmonate at concentrations of 1 mmol l 1 also increased the number of sprouts per minitubers Methyl jasmonate at 1 mmol l 1 showed minimum number and maximum fresh weight of sprouts The results also showed that potato cultivars tubers and minitubers were showed significant differences regarding all traits were measured Keywords methyl Jasmonate Spermine Gibberellic acid minituber breaking dormancy PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
